Backus Announces CWRU Athletic Department Restructuring; Schwartz & Ackerman Promoted

Case Western Reserve University Director of Athletics and Chair of Physical Education Amy Backus has announced a department restructuring, with Athletics & Physical Education now following a sports-supervision model starting in the 2019-20 academic year.  In addition, current Assistant Athletic Directors Jon Schwartz and Missy Ackerman have each been promoted to the title of Associate Athletic Director.

Under the new model, each varsity sport at Case Western Reserve will be assigned an Associate Athletic Director as a sport-supervisor.  The goal is to create additional routes of support and communication for the student-athletes and coaches.

"I am so pleased to announce this new organizational structure as it provides a benefit to our student-athlete experience as well as broader support for our coaching faculty.  We have an outstanding administrative staff and their talents will be utilized in new ways benefiting all 19 of our varsity sport programs."

In addition to maintaining oversight over the entire department, Backus will have immediate sports supervision over football, volleyball and men's basketball.  Other sports supervision assignments include baseball and women's soccer for Schwartz, cross country, men's soccer and women's basketball for Ackerman, wrestling, track and field and women's tennis for Associate Athletic Director Pat Kennedy and softball, swimming and diving and men's tennis for Associate Athletic Director for Facilities and Operations Rebecca Copeland

Schwartz is completed his fourth year at Case Western Reserve as the Assistant Athletic Director/ Sports Information Director.  His responsibilities include public relations and media coordination for all 19 varsity sports at CWRU, including issuing releases, live video webcasts of home events, publications, scholarship applications, distribution of information on all social platforms, and upkeep of the Spartans' official website,

Ackerman joined the CWRU staff in 2016 as the department's first Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations, Corporate Sponsorship and Marketing.  During her time at Case Western Reserve, she has managed the department's budget, while also expanding the corporate sponsorship program and running the annual golf tournament, the Spartan Open.
