17 Spartans Named to UAA 30th Anniversary Track and Field Teams

17 former and current Case Western Reserve University track and field team members were named to the University Athletic Association 30th Anniversary Track and Field Teams.

Alex Drollinger, Erwin Grabisna, Paul Hannen, Aaron Johnston-Peck, Kevin Luthy, Obinna Nwanna, Nathaniel Wahner, Harry Weintraub and Kyle Whitling were among the 69 student-athletes named to the men’s team, while Sheila Ballado, Jennifer Bruny, Lisa Encarnacion, Esther Erb, Justine Jeroski, Leslie Kindling, Amanda Kline and Cassandra Laios each earned a spot among the 67 student-athletes on the women’s team.

The teams consist of each student-athlete who was named Most Outstanding Performer at the UAA Indoor Track and Field Championship or UAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship, or won an individual event at the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

On the men’s side, Luthy and Nwanna each won individual events at the NCAA Championships. Luthy won the decathlon at the 1990 outdoor meet and the 1991 outdoor meet, while Nwanna won the decathlon at the 2009 outdoor meet. In addition, Luthy was also named the UAA Most Outstanding Performer during the 1988 indoor season and the 1990 outdoor season.

Drollinger (2006 Outdoor – Field), Grabisna (1988 Outdoor), Hannen (2007 Indoor – Field), Johnston-Peck (2006 Indoor – Running), Wahner (2017 Outdoor – Running), Weintraub (2014 Indoor – Field) and Whitling (2002 Outdoor) were each named Most Outstanding Performer once throughout their career.

For the women, Ballado, Erb and Kindling each won individual events at the NCAA Championships. Ballado finished first in the 100-meter hurdles at the 1990 outdoor meet, while Erb finished first in the 10,000-meter run at the 2008 outdoor meet. Erb also won back-to-back UAA Most Outstanding Performer indoor accolades (2007-08) and won the Most Outstanding Performer for outdoor in 2008. Kindling won the high jump at the NCAA Championships 1995 indoor meet and then won the heptathlon at the NCAA Championships 1995 outdoor meet. Kindling also won the Most Outstanding Performer honor three consecutive years at the UAA outdoor meet (1993-95).

Laios earned Most Outstanding Performer for field events twice (2017 Indoor and 2017 Outdoor), while Bruny (1996 Outdoor), Encarnacion (1992 Outdoor), Jeroski (2009 Indoor – Running) and Kline (2012 Outdoor – Field) were each named Most Outstanding Performer once throughout their career.

Both the CWRU men’s and women’s track and field teams will be in action this weekend, as they head to Berea, Ohio to compete in the Sparky Adams Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. Action is scheduled to take place from Friday, April 20th through Saturday, April 21st.
