Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Sept. 11: Zachary Senft and Karley King

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Zachary Senft, a midfielder on the men’s soccer team, and sophomore Karley King, an outside hitter on the volleyball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performance’s this past weekend.

Senft recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career, helping the Spartans top Brooklyn College 10-0 on Saturday night. Senft scored twice in the first half of the game against the Bulldogs, striking in the 19th minute and 22nd minute. He finished the game with four shots, including three on goal. The Spartans finished the weekend with a 1-1 record and are now 2-1-1 on the 2017 campaign.

King help the Spartans to three wins in as many matches during the 19th-Annual Marcia French Invitational. King was named the Spartans representative on the All-Tournament team, after recording 23 kills during the three matches. She added five digs and one block assist, while hitting .325. King currently ranks third on the team with 54 kills and second with a .287 hitting percentage.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Calvin Boyle (men’s soccer) played 135 minutes for the Spartans this past weekend, allowing three goals and making seven saves. In CWRU’s 10-0 win against Brooklyn on Saturday, Boyle played 45 shutout minutes and turned away three shots on goal. Boyle currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association with 16 saves and fourth with a .842 save percentage.

Abby DeCicco (women’s soccer) broke a 1-1 tie six minutes into the first overtime period with her first career goal, giving the Spartans a 2-1 victory at Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon. DeCicco struck for the game winning goal in the 96th minute of play, launching a turning shot through traffic from approximately 20 yards and sending it past the Gators’ keeper for the win.

Lauren Unterborn (women’s soccer) played over 185 minutes in goal this week, allowing two goals and making 10 saves to help the Spartans go 1-1. In the Spartans’ 2-1 overtime win against Allegheny College on Saturday, Unterborn allowed one goal throughout her time in goal, while making four saves. Unterborn currently leads the University Athletic Association in saves (21) and save percentage (.875).

Faith Ellis (volleyball) helped the Spartans collect three wins at the Marcia French Invitational this past weekend. She led CWRU with 65 assists (7.22 per set), and also tallied 18 digs and three service aces throughout the weekend. For the season, Ellis has totaled 192 assists for an 8.00 assists per set average. Her 8.00 assists per set currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association.

Aidan DeSanto (men’s cross country) was the team’s top finisher for the second-straight week at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  DeSanto placed 10th out of 212 finishers at the meet, crossing the finish line of the 8K race with a time of 26:13.5.  The time marked the third best of his career. 

Danielle Kulpins (women’s cross country) was the team’s top finisher for the second time in as many meets this season at the Ohio Wesleyan University Invitational in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  Kulpins placed sixth out of 224 finishers in the 6K race, completing the course in a time of 22:49.1.

Matthew Chen (men’s tennis) made a successful collegiate debut last weekend, going undefeated in both singles and doubles play at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday.

Katrin Gurvich (women’s tennis) led the Spartans at the BGSU Invitational this past weekend, as she went 3-1 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles play.
