Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for May 21: Dominic Oddo and Ilissa Hamilton

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Dominic Oddo, a multi-event competitor on the men’s track and field team, and sophomore Ilissa Hamilton, a pitcher on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Oddo placed fifth in the standings as he competed in his first career men’s decathlon at the Gregory Invitational this past week. He placed fifth in the final standings with a score of 5,864. On the first day, he placed third in the 100-meter dash with a career-best time of 11.47 seconds (759 points) and second in the long jump with a mark of 6.35 meters (664) points, while adding a seventh-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 10.10 meters (492 points), a third-place finish in the high jump with a mark of 1.79 meters (619 points) and sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 52.97 seconds (683 points).  Entering the second day of competition in fifth place with 3,217 points, he placed fourth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.18 seconds (713 points), sixth in each of the discus throw with a mark of 29.41 meters (453 points), the pole vault with a height of 3.50 meters (482 points) and the javelin throw with a mark of 40.07 meters (443 points), while placing ninth in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 5:00.66 (556 points).  Oddo had career-best marks in six of the eight events.

Hamilton led the Spartans to two wins against 17th-rannked Hope College this weekend at the NCAA Super Regionals. CWRU will now advance to the 2018 NCAA Division III Softball Championships that will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma from May 24th – 29th.  Hamilton went 2-1 on the mound, allowing six earned runs in 17 innings pitched, while striking out nine batters. She was tabbed as the Super Regional Most Outstanding Pitcher for her efforts. During the Spartans’ decisive 4-1 victory on Saturday, Hamilton allowed one run on six hits during her seven innings pitched, and struck out two batters. For the season, Hamilton has a 20-6 overall record, including 18 complete games. She has totaled 170.0 innings pitched, allowing 60 earned runs on 135 hits.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Katie Wede (softball) batted .400 (4-for-10) with two runs scored and two stolen bases during the three games this past weekend. She was named the Most Outstanding Player at the Holland, Michigan Super Regional for her efforts. For the season, Wede is batting .323 (51-for-158) with four doubles, 15 RBI’s and 40 runs scored. She has already broken her previous school record for stolen bases in a season and now has 26 on the campaign.

Shannon Carroll (women’s track and field) placed sixth in the standings as she competed in her first career women’s heptathlon at the Gregory Invitational this past week. She finished sixth in the standings with a final score of 4,186 points. On Thursday, Carroll placed second in the javelin throw with a mark of 37.73 meters (624 points), third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:30.17 (691 points) and fifth in the long jump with a distance of 5.07 meters (578 points).  She moved up in the event after finishing the first day in 12th place in the heptathlon standings with 2,293 points, which included a third-place finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.08 meters (600 points), a 12th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.53 seconds (651 points), a 13th-place finish in the high jump, clearing the bar at a career-best high of 1.38 meters (491 points) and a 16th-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 29.04 seconds (551 points).
