The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University senior Andrew Ibibo, a sprinter on the men’s track and field team, and sophomore Ilissa Hamilton, a pitcher on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Ibibo led the Spartan men at the Harrison Dillard Twilight meet this past weekend, as he posted two top-eight finishes at the meet. Ibibo finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time 48.36 seconds, which is the second-fastest mark in the UAA, 29th-fastest time in Division III this season and the second-fastest all-time mark in program history.
Hamilton led the Spartans to a 4-1 record this past weekend at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Notre Dame, Indiana. CWRU will now advance to the NCAA Super Regionals next weekend. Hamilton went 4-1 on the mound, allowing only three earned runs in 29.0 innings pitched, while striking out 23 batters. At the plate, she went four-for-14 with one double and two runs batted in. During the Spartans’ 5-0 win over Ohio Northern on Sunday, Hamilton pitched six shutout innings and only four hits and a walk while striking out five batters. She was named the Most Valuable Player of the Notre Dame Regional for her performance. For the season, Hamilton has an 18-5 overall record, including 16 complete games. She has totaled 153.0 innings pitched, allowing 54 earned runs on 120 hits. She currently leads the team and University Athletic Association with 169 strikeouts.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Rocco Maue (baseball) led the Spartans to a three-game sweep of the University of Chicago, batting .462 (six-for-13) with five runs scored, two doubles, three RBIs and five stolen bases on as many attempts. Maue finished the year batting .358 with 11 home runs, 35 RBIs and 26 stolen bases on 27 attempts. The Spartans concluded the 2018 campaign with a 29-10 record.
Matt Levine (baseball) allowed just two runs over eight innings, helping pitch the Spartans to an 11-4 win over the University of Chicago on Sunday. Levine yielded just six hits and a walk, while striking out one batter in the game, and he needed just 81 pitches to navigate his eight innings of work. He picked up the win in the game, improving to a team-leading 6-1 on the year, while lowering his ERA to 3.18, the best among CWRU starting pitchers in 2018.
Nicole Doyle (softball) batted .412 (7-for-17) and hit two doubles and two triples, while scoring four runs and driving in four RBI’s. During the Spartans’ 5-1 win over Ohio Northern on Sunday, Doyle went two-for-three at the plate with a double, triple, one run scored and two runs batted in. She was named to the All-Notre Dame Regional team for her efforts. For the season, Doyle ranks third on the team with a .363 batting average (57-for-157) with three triples, five home runs, 16 doubles, 30 RBI’s and 36 runs scored.
Danielle Kulpins (women’s track and field) led the Spartan women at the Harrison Dillard Twilight meet this past weekend, as she finished third in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:47.68.
Nimi Gupta (women’s track and field) earned a sixth-place finish in the hammer throw at the Harrison Dillard Twilight meet with mark of 48.00 meters.
Alex Nesvisky (men’s track and field) was the team’s top-finisher in the hammer throw at the Harrison Dillard Twilight meet with a toss of 46.54 meters. That mark currently ranks fourth in the University Athletic Association.
