Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Apr. 9: Grant Mlack and Ilissa Hamilton

Case Western Reserve University senior Grant Mlack, a sprinter on the men’s track and field team, and sophomore Ilissa Hamilton, a pitcher on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Mlack led the Case Western Reserve men at the Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday, winning both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles. He finished first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.66 and placed first in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.20. He also was a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that placed first in the event with a time of 3:30.56. His time of 55.20 in the 400-meter hurdles currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association and tied for 28th in Division III.

Hamilton helped the Spartans sweep the Brandeis University Judges in a four-game series at Mather Park this weekend. Hamilton went 2-0 on the mound, allowing zero runs in 13.0 innings pitched, while striking out 12 batters. At the plate, Hamilton also hit .333 (3-for-9) with one home run and one run batted in. During the Spartans’ 5-0 win against Brandeis on Saturday, she pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing zero runs on four hits and struck out eight batters. She also hit her first home run as a member of the Spartan softball team. For the season, Hamilton has a 7-3 overall record, including seven complete games. She has totaled 71 innings pitched, allowing 37 earned runs on 68 hits. She currently leads the team with 68 strikeouts and ranks second in the University Athletic Association. The Spartans improved to 17-6 overall and have a 4-4 record in the UAA.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Alex Capetillo (baseball) batted .667 over four victories for the 13th-ranked Spartans at Brandeis University last weekend. Capetillo collected 12 hits in 18 at bats, including three doubles and a home run, while scoring five runs, driving in four, walking twice, and stealing three bases on five attempts.  He finished the weekend slugging 1.000, while recording an on base percentage of .714. For the season, Capetillo is batting .553 (21-for-38) with nine runs scored, three doubles, a triple, a home run, seven RBIs and three stolen bases.  The Spartans have won seven-straight games to improve to 20-3 overall, and hold a three-game lead in the UAA standings with a 7-1 conference record.

Ben Murphy (baseball) helped limit Brandeis University to two runs on four hits over 7.2 innings during the 13th-ranked Spartans’ 8-3 win over the Judges on Sunday.  Murphy did not walk a batter in the game, and struck out five, while allowing just one earned run. Murphy improved to 4-1 on the season, while lowering his earned run average to 1.55, and opponents are hitting just .216 against him this season. 

Sarah Miller (softball) helped the Spartans sweep Brandeis University in a four-game series at Mather Park this weekend. Miller batted .400 (4-for-10), including a double, triple and two home runs, while also driving in four RBI’s.

Rachel Willard (women’s track and field) gathered a first-place finish in the triple jump at the Marv Frye Invitational on Saturday. Willard picked up the win in the event with a mark of 10.73 meters.

Danielle Kulpins (women’s track and field) led the Spartan women at the Marv Frye Invitational on Saturday, as she claimed the title in the 5,000-meter run. Kulpins finished first in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 17.23.40, which currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association and 11th in Division III.

Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) gathered three top-three finishes at the Marv Frye Invitational this past weekend. Oddo claimed the title in the long jump with a mark of 6.80 meters, while also earning a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles (57.00) and a third-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles (16.02). His mark of 6.80 meters in the long jump currently ranks first in the UAA and tied for 21st in Division III.

James Fojtasek (men’s tennis) helped lead the 20th-ranked Spartans to a 9-0 win over Franciscan University with wins at both no. 1 singles and doubles on Sunday. Fojtasek, ranked 12th in the Central Region in singles play, improved to 8-10 in singles play and 10-12 in doubles matches this season with the two wins.  The Spartans improved to 10-8 on the season with the win.

Madeleine Paolucci (women's tennis) led the 16th-ranked Spartans to an 8-1 win over Oberlin College on Saturday. She went 1-0 second singles and 1-0 and first doubles. For the season, Paolucci has 13-10 record in singles play and an 18-9 overall record in doubles play. Case Western Reserve improved to 12-3 on the season.
