Case Western Reserve University freshman Matt Levine, a pitcher on the baseball team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a distance runner on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Levine threw a complete-game shutout, the first of his career, to lead the 13th-ranked Spartans to a 4-0 win over Emory University on Sunday. Levine surrendered just six hits and a walk in the game, while striking out four batters. He allowed just one runner past second base, and at one point retired nine-consecutive hitters between the sixth and ninth innings. The right-handed pitcher needed to throw just 103 pitches in the complete-game shutout, the first by a Spartan pitcher since former CWRU hurler Jake Shields registered one against Brandeis on April 2nd last season. Levine improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while lowering his earned run average to 1.80. The victory also clinched a win for the Spartans in their opening weekend of University Athletic Association play, as the team improved to 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
Kulpins led the Spartan women to a third-place finish at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational on Friday. Kulpins picked up the win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new meet record time of 10:57.07, besting the previous meet record of 11:27.79 set by Otterbein’s Heather Sandvik last season. Her time in the event currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association and third among all runners in Division III.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Rocco Maue (baseball) hit .333 (five-for-15) with two doubles, three home runs, five runs scored, three RBIs, two walks and a stolen base, helping the 13th-ranked Spartans take three games of a four-game series against Emory University last weekend. Maue leads the UAA in batting average (.413), home runs (eight), and stolen bases (13) this season, and has driven in 20 runs while scoring 27. The Spartans improved to 16-3 overall and are tied for first in the UAA standings with a 3-1 league record.

Sam Concannon (men’s tennis) went 2-1 in singles matches and a perfect 3-0 in doubles play during three matches over the weekend for the 20th-ranked Spartans.
