Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Apr. 2: Matt Levine and Danielle Kulpins

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University freshman Matt Levine, a pitcher on the baseball team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a distance runner on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.

Levine threw a complete-game shutout, the first of his career, to lead the 13th-ranked Spartans to a 4-0 win over Emory University on Sunday.  Levine surrendered just six hits and a walk in the game, while striking out four batters.  He allowed just one runner past second base, and at one point retired nine-consecutive hitters between the sixth and ninth innings.  The right-handed pitcher needed to throw just 103 pitches in the complete-game shutout, the first by a Spartan pitcher since former CWRU hurler Jake Shields registered one against Brandeis on April 2nd last season.  Levine improved to 3-0 on the season with the win, while lowering his earned run average to 1.80.  The victory also clinched a win for the Spartans in their opening weekend of University Athletic Association play, as the team improved to 16-3 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

Kulpins led the Spartan women to a third-place finish at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational on Friday. Kulpins picked up the win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a new meet record time of 10:57.07, besting the previous meet record of 11:27.79 set by Otterbein’s Heather Sandvik last season. Her time in the event currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association and third among all runners in Division III.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Rocco Maue (baseball) hit .333 (five-for-15) with two doubles, three home runs, five runs scored, three RBIs, two walks and a stolen base, helping the 13th-ranked Spartans take three games of a four-game series against Emory University last weekend. Maue leads the UAA in batting average (.413), home runs (eight), and stolen bases (13) this season, and has driven in 20 runs while scoring 27.  The Spartans improved to 16-3 overall and are tied for first in the UAA standings with a 3-1 league record.

Rachel Willard (women’s track and field) earned two top-five finishes at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational on Friday. Willard placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.08 meters and then she finished fifth in the long jump with a mark of 5.03 meters.

Aidan DeSanto (men’s track and field) led the Spartan men to a first-place finish at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational on Friday. DeSanto claimed the title in the 1,500-meter run with a new meet record time of 4:03.41, besting the previous meet record of 4:09.11 set last year.

Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) earned a third-place finish in the long jump to help the Spartan men finish first at the Otterbein April Fool’s Invitational on Friday. Oddo posted a mark of 6.42 meters in the event, which currently ranks as the fourth-best mark in the UAA.

Sam Concannon (men’s tennis) went 2-1 in singles matches and a perfect 3-0 in doubles play during three matches over the weekend for the 20th-ranked Spartans. For the season, Concannon leads the team with a 21-7 record in singles play, and has gone 15-9 in doubles matches.  With the 2-1 weekend, the Spartans improved to 9-8 on the season.

Maren Waldner (softball) batted .412 (7-for-17) and hit one home run, while also driving in four RBI’s to help the Spartans this past week. For the season, Waldner leads the team with a .536 batting average (37-for-69), while scoring 19 runs and driving in 16 RBI’s. She currently leads the University Athletic Association in batting average and ranks tied for third in runs batted in.
