The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Michael Hradesky, a sprinter on the men’s track and field team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a distance runner on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Hradesky led the Case Western Reserve men to a third-place finish at the 2018 All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on Saturday. Hradesky claimed an All-Ohio honor in the 800-meter run, placing first with a time of 1:55.87. His time in the event currently ranks fourth in the University Athletic Association. Hradesky was also a member of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second in the event with a time of 3:20.79.
Kulpins led the Spartan women to an eighth-place finish at the 2018 All-Ohio Outdoor Championships on Saturday. Kulpins earned All-Ohio honors with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.17, which bests her previous school record of 11:10.89 set in 2016. Her time also set a new meet record at the All-Ohio Championships, as she bested Baldwin Wallace’s Jessica Textoris who ran a time of 10:40.89 during the 2003 season. Kulpins’ time currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association and first in Division III.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Nate Glasser (baseball) hit .400 (four-for-10) with two runs scored, three RBIs and five stolen bases on as many tries during the 11th-ranked Spartans’ series win against New York University last weekend. Glasser also drew seven walks over the three games, raising his on base percentage to a team-best .611 for the four contests. Glasser is batting .294 this season with a .410 on base percentage and 11 runs batted in, while stealing 16 bases on as many tries. The Spartans won three of four games against NYU over the weekend, improving to 23-4 overall and remaining in first place in the University Athletic Association with a 10-2 conference record.
Scott Kutschke (baseball) pitched in all three of the 11th-ranked Spartans’ wins against New York University last weekend, earning victories in two of the games. Kutschke pitched eight shutout innings out of the bullpen over the three games, allowing just five hits and four walks, while striking out six batters. For the season, Kutschke is 4-0 with a 1.88 earned run average over 10 appearances out of the bullpen.
Katie Wede (softball) led the Spartans’ offensively as they posted a 3-1 record against New York University this past weekend. Wede batted .625 (10-for-16) and scored five runs, while also driving in one RBI and stealing three bases. For the season, Wede is batting .345 (30-for-87) with one home run, four doubles and 12 runs batted in, while also leading the team with 10 stolen bases. CWRU improved to 20-7 overall and 7-5 in the conference.
Sidney Brannam (softball) helped the Spartans win three out of their four games against New York University this weekend. Brannam went 2-0 on the mound, allowing only one earned run in 13.0 innings pitched, while striking out five batters. For the season, Brannam has a 10-3 overall record, including seven complete games. She has totaled 70.2 innings pitched, allowing 20 earned runs on 73 hits for a team-best 1.98 ERA. She currently ranks second in the UAA in wins and third in earned run average.
Shannon Carroll (women’s track and field) helped the Spartan women place eighth at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships by claiming an All-Ohio honor in the javelin throw. Carroll finished second in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.78 meters, which currently ranks as the best mark in the UAA.
Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) helped the Spartan men place third at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships by claiming an All-Ohio honor in the long jump. Oddo finished third in the event with a mark of 6.68 meters.
Anthony Kanam (men’s tennis) went undefeated in both singles and doubles play during the 18th-ranked Spartans 3-1 weekend. Kanam recorded 3-0 records at both third singles and first doubles with partner James Fojtasek during the weekend. For the season, he has a team-best 25-8 singles record and 21-15 doubles mark. The Spartans stand at 13-9 overall in 2018.
Nithya Kanagasegar (women’s tennis) led the 16th-ranked Spartans to a 7-2 win over Division II opponent Walsh University on Thursday. She went 1-0 at first singles and 1-0 at first doubles. For the season, she has posted a 13-11 singles record and a 19-8 doubles record. Case Western Reserve improved to 13-3 with Thursday’s victory.
