Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Mar. 5: James Fojtasek and Grace Tritchler

Case Western Reserve University senior James Fojtasek, a member of the men’s tennis team, and senior Grace Tritchler, an infielder on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Fojtasek went undefeated over two matches for the 25th-ranked Spartans, leading the team to a pair of victories on Saturday at the Medical Mutual Tennis Pavilion in Cleveland, Ohio.  In the early contest against the University of Rochester, a 9-0 CWRU win, Fojtasek teamed with freshman Matthew Chen to defeat Masaru Fujimaki and Peter Huang 8-1 in the no. 1 doubles match, and later topped Fujimaki in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, at no. 1 singles.  He went on to claim a pair of victories during an 8-1 win over #35 Hobart College, pairing with Chen for an 8-6 first doubles win over Alan Dubrovsky and Jonah Salita (ranked eighth in the Northeast Region) and a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 10-8 victory at no. 1 singles over Dubrovsky, ranked 31st in Division III and 13th in the Northeast Region.  Fojtasek improved to 3-7 in singles play and to 7-6 in doubles action with the wins on Saturday, and ranks sixth in school history with 56 career singles victories, and fifth with 71 career doubles wins.  The Spartans have won three-straight matches and improved to 6-4 overall in 2018.

Tritchler batted .500 (8-for-16) during the Spartans season-opening weekend and the led squad with two home runs and eight runs batted in as CWRU won all four of their games this past weekend. During the team’s 9-2 win over Marietta on Saturday, Tricthler led the Spartans with a two-for-four performance, including two home runs and two runs batted in. She followed that with a three-for-four performance during the Spartans 9-1 win over Susquehanna, including a game-high three runs batted in. Tritchler also added another two RBI’s on Sunday during the Spartans 11-2 win over Susquehanna. For the season, Tritchler is ranks first on the team in RBI’s (8), tied for first in home runs (2) and tied for second in batting average (.500). CWRU is a perfect 4-0 overall on the season.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Ilissa Hamilton (softball) went 2-0 during this past week with 15 strikeouts in 12.0 innings and a 3.00 earned run average. At the plate, Hamilton batted .231 (3-for-13) with one double and one run batted in.

Corey Brown (baseball) threw five shutout innings out of the bullpen to earn a win in relief during the team’s 6-2 victory over Allegheny College on Saturday.  Brown entered the game with the score tied at 2-2 to start the bottom of the fifth and would go on to complete the contest on the mound, striking out five and allowing just one hit and three walks during the 68-pitch effort.  Brown’s effort helped the Spartans open the campaign with a 3-1 record.

Rocco Maue (baseball) hit safely in three of the team’s four games during their opening weekend of the 2018 campaign.  Maue collected eight hits in 18 at bats, batting .444 with four runs score, three doubles and an RBI, while stealing two bases on as many attempts and notching a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage. The Spartans opened the 2018 season with a 3-1 record.

Shannon Carroll (women’s track and field) broke the school record in the women’s pentathlon at the 2018 Polar Bear Last Chance Meet on Friday. Carroll’s 2,900 points broke the previous school record of 2,593 points set by Keri Walter in 2012. She won the shot put with a toss of 10.99 meters (594 points). Carroll also added a third-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:38.64 (589 points). She had two sixth-place finishes in the high jump (1.43m, 544 points) and the long jump (4.77m, 498 points), while also placing seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (10.20, 675 points).

Madeleine Paolucci (women’s tennis) helped the 18th-ranked Spartans sweep the 37th-ranked University of Rochester on Saturday. She teamed with senior Nithya Kanagasegar at first doubles to defeat Camila Garcia and Sravya Gudipudi 8-2. Paolucci then bested Garcia at first singles 6-4, 7-5. For the season, Paolucci is 13-7 overall in doubles play and 9-8 in singles play. Case Western Reserve improved to 6-2 overall for the season.
