The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University junior Rocco Maue, an infielder on the baseball team, and senior Maren Waldner, an infielder on the softball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Maue helped the team complete a perfect spring trip, batting .450 with five home runs and 11 runs batted in over the team’s final five games of the trip. Playing at the Lexington County Baseball Stadium in Lexington, South Carolina, Maue collected nine hits in 20 at-bats, scored seven runs, walked three times and stole a pair of bases, while slugging 1.200 with an on base percentage of .542. He started all five games during the week as the team’s second hitter and second baseman, and committed just one error for a .976 fielding percentage. Highlights from his week included a five-for-six performance against Roger Williams on Tuesday, during which he hit three home runs with eight runs batted in, three runs scored and a stolen base, en route to a 12-1 win. He also went one-for-four with a home run and two RBIs in an 8-1 win over Roger Williams the previous day, and one-of-for-four with an inside-the-park home run in a 3-1 victory over Trinity College on Sunday. Maue leads all CWRU players this season with a .467 average, 15 runs scored, five home runs, four doubles, 13 RBIs, and eight stolen bases on as many attempts, while notching a .985 fielding percentage, and currently has a seven-game hitting streak. The Spartans went undefeated on their spring break trip and have won eight-straight games overall to open their season with a 10-1.
Waldner led the Spartans’ offensively as they posted a 7-1 record during their spring break trip this past week. Waldner batted .613 (19-for-31) and scored 11 runs, while also driving in eight RBI’s. During the trip, Waldner hit safely in every game, including multiple-hits in six of the eight spring break games. In the last game of the trip, Waldner helped the Spartans’ defeat Gustavus Adolphus 13-2 as she led the team with a four-for-five performance and four runs scored. For the season, Waldner is batting .565 (26-for-46) with a team-high 15 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple and 10 RBI’s. Waldner currently ranks first among all University Athletic Association players in batting average, and ranks fifth in runs batted in. Case Western Reserve stands at 11-1 overall on the season.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Sidney Brannam (softball) helped the Spartans go 7-1 during their spring break trip to Arizona this past week. Brannam went 4-1 on the mound, allowing seven earned runs in 26.0 innings pitched, while striking out 17 batters. For the season, Brannam has a 6-1 overall record, including three complete games. She has totaled a team-high 36 innings pitched, allowing nine earned runs on 30 hits, while striking out 24 batters.
Liam Killingstad (baseball) earned saves in back-to-back games for the Spartans to complete the Spartan Southern Classic in Lexington, South Carolina last week. On Friday night, the southpaw struck out four batters and walked just one over 1.2 innings of work to close out a 5-2 win over Trinity College. He followed that with a scoreless ninth inning in a 3-1 victory over Trinity the next afternoon, allowing one hit and striking out a batter. Killingstad has gone 2-0 overall this season with three saves, and has not allowed a run on two hits and four walks over eight innings of work, while striking out nine batters.
Nimi Gupta (women’s track and field) Gupta placed first in the hammer throw at the 2018 Washington and Lee University Carnival this past weekend. She claimed the title with a mark of 43.43 meters, which ranks first in the University Athletic Association and 16th in Division III.
Madeline Lindemann (women’s track and field) won the 10,000-meter run at the 2018 W&L Carnival this past weekend. She placed first in the event with a time of 37:45.82, which currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association.
Grant Mlack (men’s track and field) earned third-place finishes in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 400-meter hurdles at the 2018 Washington and Lee Carnival this past weekend. His time of 15.44 in the 110-meter hurdles currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association, and his time of 56.73 in the 400-meter hurdles ranks first among UAA competitors.
Brian Holden (men’s track and field) earned a fifth-place finish in the javelin at the 2018 W&L Carnival this past weekend. Holden placed fifth in the event with a mark of 49.65 meters, which currently ranks first among University Athletic Association competitors.
Anthony Kanam (men’s tennis) went 3-1 in singles matches and 2-3 in doubles play during the 25th-ranked Spartans’ spring break trip to California last week. For the year, Kanam is a team-best 20-7 in singles matches, and has tallied a 16-13 doubles record. The Spartans now stand at 7-7 overall this season.
Jessica Liu (women’s tennis) led the 17th-ranked Spartans to a 5-1 record during their spring break trip to Florida and Virginia this past week. She recorded a 4-1 singles record, while also going 6-0 in her doubles matches. For the season, Liu is 9-2 overall in singles play and 11-2 overall in doubles play. Case Western Reserve stands at 11-3 overall on the season.
