The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University senior Drew Hamilton, a swimmer on the men’s swimming and diving team, and junior Suhan Mestha, a swimmer on the women’s swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Hamilton claimed one All-UAA honor and qualified for two NCAA Division III ‘B’ cut times to help the Spartan men finish sixth at the 2018 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. On Thursday, Hamilton recorded a ‘B’ cut time of 4:30.70 in the 500-yard freestyle en route to placing fifth in the event. On Friday, Hamilton finished third in the 400-yard individual medley with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 3:59.25 to earn All-UAA honors.
Mestha claimed three All-UAA honors, broke two school records and qualified for four NCAA Division III ‘B’ cut times to help the Spartan women finish sixth at the 2018 UAA Swimming and Diving Championships in Atlanta, Georgia. On Thursday, Mestha placed third in the 50-yard freestyle with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 23.62 to earn All-UAA honors. On Friday, Mestha finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a ‘B’ cut time and new school-record time of 56.09, which bests her previous school record of 56.24 set at the Wooster Invitational this past December. On the final day of the UAA Championships, Mestha was a member of the women’s 400-yard freestyle relay team that placed third with a NCAA ‘B’ cut time and new school record time of 3:28.84, which bests the previous school record of 3:30.71 set at the 2017 Wooster Invitational. She also added a 10th-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a ‘B’ cut time of 2:02.16.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Emily Todd (women’s basketball) averaged 13.0 points over two games for the Spartans last weekend. Todd finished the weekend shooting nine-of-22 (40.9%) from the floor, including eight-of-14 (57.1%) from behind the three-point line. For the season, Todd has averaged 8.8 points per game. The Spartans will enter their final game of the season with a 4-19 overall record and a 1-12 ledger in University Athletic Association games.
Michael Hollis (men’s basketball) recorded the first double-double of his career during the Spartans’ 98-78 loss to the University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon. Hollis scored a career-high 18 points on a six-of-nine shooting effort in the game, including a one-of-two mark from long range, and connecting on five-of-seven shots from the free throw line. He added a game-high 12 rebounds with three assists and a block over his 30 minutes on the court. Hollis averaged 9.0 points and 8.5 rebounds during the two games, and for the season, has averaged 6.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, while leading all CWRU players in assists (82), blocks (21) and steals (28).
Kai Fletcher (men’s track and field) earned a third-place finish in the high jump on Saturday at the Mount Union Tune Up. He finished third with a mark of 1.91 meters, which currently ranks third in the University Athletic Association.
Cassandra Laios (women’s track and field) claimed the title in the shot put at the Mount Union Tune Up this past weekend. Laios placed first in the event with a toss of 13.12 meters, which ranks as the best mark in the UAA this past week.
Julie Hines (women’s track and field) claimed the 400-meter dash title at the Mount Union Tune Up on Saturday. Hines crossed the finish line with a time of 1:02.16, which currently ranks 14th in the University Athletic Association.
Mira Amin (women’s tennis) went 2-0 in singles play and 1-0 in doubles play for the 18th-ranked Spartans during the team’s matches this weekend. Including the fall season, Amin improved to a team-best 11-3 in singles matches and to 7-5 in doubles contests with her performances over the weekend.
