The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Dominic Oddo, a multi-event competitor on the men’s track and field team, and junior Suhan Mestha, a swimmer on the women’s swimming and diving team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.
Oddo led the Spartan men to first-place finish at the Fifth-Annual Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Oddo broke the school record in the long jump with a mark of 6.97 meters, which bests the previous school record of 6.69 meters set by Andrew Barnhart in 2012. He also claimed a first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles (8.94) and a third-place finish in the high jump (1.82 meters). Oddo’s mark of 6.97 meters in the long jump currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association, while his time of 8.77 in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles ranks third in the UAA and his mark of 1.82 meters in the high jump ranks second.
Mestha recorded three NCAA Division III ‘B’ cut times and broke two school records, as she led the Spartan women to a first place finish at the 2017 Wooster Invitational. During the first day of the meet, Mestha placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a ‘B’ cut time of 23.63. In addition, she was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay that finished first in the event with a school-record time of 3:52.89, besting the previous school record of 3:54.28 set back in 2012. On Friday, Mestha won the 100-yard backstroke with a ‘B’ cut time and new school record time of 56.24. Her time bested the previous school record of 56.99 set by Mestha in 2016 at the UAA Championships. She concluded the invite on Saturday with a ‘B’ cut time of 2:02.55 in the 200-yard backstroke. That time also broke the previous school record of 2:03.49 set by Mestha in 2016. Mestha currently ranks third in the University Athletic Association in the 50 Free, fourth in the 100 Back and fourth in the 200 Back.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: T.J. Duckett (men’s basketball) set a career-high with 18 rebounds, helping lead the Spartans to a 74-67 win over Adrian College on Saturday afternoon. Duckett shot seven-of-10 from the floor, all inside the perimeter, while collected 15 defensive boards and three offensive, and adding an assist and block. The 18 rebounds broke his previous career high of 16, set against SUNY Brockport last season, and were the most by a University Athletic Association player in a game this season. He is averaging 13.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game this season, both of which lead the squad. The Spartans have opened their 2017-18 season with a 2-4 record.
Kendall McConico (women’s basketball) averaged 11.0 points and 6.0 rebounds over two games for the Spartans last week. McConico shot 47.1% from the floor (47.1%) and added four assists and four steals. On Wednesday, in an 88-49 loss to 15th-ranked Ohio Northern, McConico scored eight points and tallied a career-high eight rebounds with a steal and an assist, shooting two-of-four from the field. On Saturday, she helped lead the Spartans to an 86-54 victory over Wooster, scoring 14 points with four rebounds, three assists and three steals, with a six-of-13 shooting performance. For the year, McConico is averaging 13.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The Spartans are 3-3 overall for the year.
Nate Lewis (wrestling) paced the Spartans at the 52nd-Annual RIT Invitational on Saturday. He contributed 14.0 points towards the team total and earned a sixth-place finish in the 285-pound weight class. He earned a fall to open the day, pinning Thiel’s Eli Swain in 2:38. After dropping his next match, Lewis tallied four consecutive victories, including a pin against RIT’s Temuulen Enkjhargal (1:52), a pin against Lycoming’s Tom Lynd (1:13) and a major decision victory against Scranton’s Will Oxley (11-3).
Drew Hamilton (men’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan men to a first-place finish at the 2017 Wooster Invitational this past weekend. Hamilton earned a win in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:36.93. He then won the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:05.98. Hamilton closed out the invite on Saturday by setting a new school record in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:53.73 set during a time trial. He bested the previous record of 1:53.88 set by Nick Clyde in 2012. He also finshed first in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 52.72. Hamilton’s time of 52.72 in the 100 IM currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association.
Brooke Hortness (women’s swimming and diving) helped the Spartan women earn a first-place finish at the 2017 Wooster Invitational this past weekend. She finished second in the three-meter dive with a score of 387.85 and third in the one-meter dive with a score of 342.95. She currently ranks third in the UAA in the three-meter dive and seventh in the one meter dive.
Michael Hradesky (men’s track and field) earned a first-place finish in the 800-meter run to help the Spartan men place first out of six teams at the Fifth-Annual Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Hradesky crossed the finish line in a time of 1:58.03, which currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association.
Cassandra Laios (women’s track and field) led the Spartan women to a second-place finish at the Fifth-Annual Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Laios finished second in the shot put with a mark of 13.65 meters, which breaks her previous school record of 12.64 meters set last indoor season. She also added a third-place finish in the weight throw with a toss of 15.77 meters. Laios’ mark of 13.65 meters in the shot put and her mark of 15.77 meters in the weight throw currently rank first in the University Athletic Association.
Kiera Olson (women’s track and field) earned a first-place finish in the one-mile run to help the Spartan women place second out of six teams at the Fifth-Annual Spartan Holiday Classic on Saturday. Olson crossed the finish line in a time of 5:34.71, which currently ranks fifth-best in the UAA.
