Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Dec. 11: Andrew Ibibo and Cassandra Laios

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University senior Andrew Ibibo, a runner on the men’s track and field team, and senior Cassandra Laios, a thrower on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Ibibo led the Spartan men this past weekend as he broke the school record in the 300-meter dash. Ibibo finished fourth in the event with a time of 35.64, which bests the previous school record of 36.19 set by Andre Christian in 1994. In addition, Ibibo was a member of the men’s 4x400-meter relay team that finished seventh with a time of 3:25.10. That time currently ranks second in the University Athletic Association.

Laios set two CWRU records during the Kent State Golden Gala this past weekend. Laios hit a mark of 17.62 meters in the weight throw, besting the previous school record of 17.02 meters, set by former Spartan Temi Omilabu during the 2016 indoor season. Her fifth-place finish in the event was the highest among Division III competitors at the meet. On Saturday, Laios finished fifth in the shot put with a school-record mark of 14.09 meters, which bests her previous school record of 13.65 meters set last weekend at the Fifth-Annual Spartan Holiday Classic. Her marks in both the weight throw and shot put currently rank first in the University Athletic Association. Laios also currently ranks second in both events on the 2018 NCAA Division III Indoor qualifying list.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Monty Khela (men’s basketball) scored a career-high 19 points during the Spartans’ 66-64 loss to Kalamazoo on Saturday.  Khela made six-of-15 shots in the game, including a career-best five three pointers on ten attempts.  He added three rebounds, an assist and two steals in the game.  He is averaging 8.1 points per game this year.  Case Western Reserve has opened its season with a 3-5 record.

Hillary Hellmann (women’s basketball) recorded her third double-double of the year during the Spartans’ 53-51 loss to Kenyon on Fridaynight.  Hellmann finished the game with 23 points and 10 rebounds, leading all players in both categories.  She shot seven-of-20 from the floor overall and six-of-13 from long range, matching her career high for three pointers made in a game, which was just one short of the program record.  Hellmann also added three steals and two blocks in the contest.  For the season, she is averaging 18.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, while shooting 38.0% from the floor overall, including a 40.0% mark from three point range.  Hellmann and the Spartans stand at 3-4 on the season.
