Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Nov. 13: Sam Merriman and Danielle Kulpins

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University senior Sam Merriman, a runner on the men’s cross country team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a runner on the women’s cross country team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Merriman earned All-Region honors for the third-straight year at the 2017 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  Merriman placed fourth out of 242 finishers in the 8K race, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:22.1 to claim the all-region award.  He helped lead the Spartans to a seventh-place finish out of 36 teams competing at the meet.  By virtue of his finish, he qualified for next weekend’s NCAA Division III Championships in Elsah, Illinois.

Kulpins earned All-Region honors for the second-consecutive year at the 2017 NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional Championships in Powell, Ohio on Saturday.  Kulpins was the team’s top finisher, placing 17th out of 247 finishers in the 6K race with a time of 22:57.2.  She helped lead the Spartans to an eighth-place finish out of 35 competing teams at the meet.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Justin Phan (football) led the 14th-ranked Spartans to a thrilling 41-34 win over Carnegie Mellon University in Saturday’s Academic Bowl, making a number of key plays down the stretch of the game.  Phan finished the contest with six receptions for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a game-winning three yard touchdown catch in overtime.  Earlier in the game, he caught a 36-yard touchdown pass with 13:13 remaining in the fourth quarter, and setup a game-tying field goal in the second quarter with a 41-yard reception.  Phan also made one of the biggest plays of the game, scooping up a blocked punt on the Carnegie Mellon three-yard line with just 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to turn a four-point deficit into a three-point lead. 

Andrew Banathy (football) recorded a career-high 12 tackles (eight solo) during the 14th-ranked Spartans’ 41-34 overtime win over Carnegie Mellon University in Saturday’s Academic Bowl.  Included in his tackle total were 2.5 tackles for a loss.  In addition, Banathy recorded his first interception of the year during the second quarter of the game, setting up a go-ahead touchdown for the Spartans, and broke up a pass. 

Zach Lyon (football) made a key play on special teams to help the 14th-ranked Spartans to a 41-34 overtime win over Carnegie Mellon in Saturday’s Academic Bowl.  With the Spartans trailing by four points with 28 seconds remaining on the clock and the ball on the Tartans’ 43 yard line, Lyon was able to block Tyler Kohman’s punt, deflecting it back to the three-yard line, where it was scooped and returned for a touchdown by Justin Phan, leading to the miracle comeback for CWRU.  Lyon finished the game with three tackles, including two solo, and for the season, he has totaled 28 tackles (19 solo).

Gavin Dersh-Fisher (wrestling) was one of five Spartans to place at the 2017 Ohio Intercollegiate Open on Sunday. Dersh-Fisher placed fifth in the Open 197 weight class with a record of 4-1. He won by fall (6:37) over Notre Dame’s Paul Ivy, earned a 6-1 decision over CWRU freshman Michael Hughes, won by a medical forfeit over Mercyhurst’s Wes Phipps and a claimed a sudden victory -1 (4-2) over Ohio University’s Mason Kroening.
