Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Oct. 9: Andrew Banathy and Kimberly Chen

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University senior Andrew Banathy, an inside linebacker on the football team, and sophomore Kimberly Chen, a forward on the women’s soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performance’s this past week.

Banathy led the best defensive effort of the season for the 16th-ranked Spartans on Saturday, helping the team to a 33-3 win over Bethany College.  Banathy finished the game with a team-high seven tackles, including one sack.  The CWRU defense held Bethany to just 159 total yards of offense (including just 61 passing yards) and to just one third down conversion on 12 attempts.  It was the first time that the Spartans have held an opponent without a touchdown since a shutout win over Grove City on September 17, 2016.  Banathy leads the team with 27 tackles and is second on the squad with 4.5 tackles for a loss and two sacks, helping pace a unit that leads the PAC in both scoring defense (12.4 points per game) and total defense (224.2 yards per game).  The Spartans improved to 5-0 with the win, including a 4-0 mark in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play.

Chen scored the game-winning goal for the Spartans during the team’s 1-0 non-conference win over the College of Wooster on Tuesday. Chen received a pass from senior Elle Zadina at the 3:51 mark in the first half and sent a shot past the Wooster goalkeeper from approximately 15 yards out, giving the Spartans a lead with what proved to be the only score of the game. She finished the game with two shots, both on goal. On Saturday, Chen scored her third goal of the season during the team’s 2-1 loss at New York University. For the season, Chen ranks first on the team with two game-winning goals and tied for first with three goals. The Spartans are 5-7-0 overall this season and 0-2-0 in the UAA.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Rob Cuda (football) had a hand in all four touchdowns during the 16th-ranked Spartans’ 33-3 win over Bethany College on Saturday.  Cuda completed 19-of-34 passes (55.9%) for 299 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for another nine yards and a score.  In the second quarter, he threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Adam Zybko and snuck in from one-yard out for a score (immediately following a 27-yard completion to convert a fourth-and-four).  He added to the Spartans’ lead further in the second half, completing touchdowns of 14 yards to Justin Phan in the third quarter and four yards to Aaron Aguilar. For the season, Cuda has completed 60.1% of his passes for 1,479 yards and 15 touchdowns with just three interceptions, while rushing for another 131 yards and two scores.

Seldon Magruder (men’s soccer) recorded the first multiple-goal game of his career, helping the Spartans top New York University 5-1 in Saturday’s conference match. Magruder scored the game-winning goal in the first half, striking the ball past the NYU keeper in the 32nd minute. Magruder scored his second goal of the game to close out the Spartan scoring when he received a thru ball from sophomore Brian Woo and found the back of the net to secure the Spartan victory. The Spartans improved to 5-5-2 overall, and 1-1-0 in the UAA.

Anthony Kanam (men’s tennis) went 2-0 in singles play and 2-2 in doubles matches, despite facing Division II and NAIA competition throughout the weekend at the Racer Invitational, hosted by the University of Northwestern Ohio in Lima.
