Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Oct. 30: Michael Balog and Madeline Lindemann

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University senior Michael Balog, a forward on the men’s soccer team, and sophomore Madeline Lindemann, a runner on the women’s cross country team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performance’s this past week.

Balog scored the game-winning goal just over three minutes into the second overtime period on Sunday to give the Spartans a 3-2 win over Emory University. Freshman midfielder Connor Weber sent a corner kick to the far post, where Balog was able to head it in for the ‘golden goal’, securing the conference win for CWRU. The victory was Case Western Reserve’s first overtime win since a 1-0 victory over Kenyon at home last season, and its first double-overtime victory since a 1-0 triumph over Carnegie Mellon in two overtime periods on November 7, 2015. Balog also assisted on sophomore Zachary Senft’s goal that gave the Spartans their second goal of the game. For the season, Balog ranks third on the team in goals (5) and tied for first on the team in shots on goal (17). The Spartans improved 6-9-2 overall and 2-4-0 in the UAA.

Lindemann was the team’s top finisher at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships on Saturday.  Lindemann crossed the finish line of the 6K race with a time of 24:18.2, finishing 11th out of 76 finishers at the meet.  Her effort earned her All-UAA Second Team honors, the first all-conference recognition of her career, and marked the first time that she has been the team’s top finisher in a race.  Lindemann helped the Spartans place seventh in the team standings at the meet.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Jacob Burke (football) rushed for a season-high 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns during the 17th-ranked Spartans 45-28 win over Washington University (Mo.) on Saturday afternoon.  Burke carried the ball a season-high 27 times, averaging 6.2 yards per carry during the game, and scoring touchdowns from nine and ten yards out in the first quarter of the game.  With the effort, he moved just 95 yards away from becoming the eighth player in school history with 2,000 career rushing yards. 

Cody Calhoun (football) finished Saturday’s 45-28 win over Washington University (Mo.) with a team-high 10 tackles for the 17th-ranked Spartans.  Calhoun added one tackle for a loss, a fumble recovery and an interception, pacing a CWRU defensive effort that limited the Bears to 369 total yards (including just 81 on the ground) and just 14 points on 194 yards of offense through the first three quarters. 

Melanie Kukura (women’s soccer) recorded her first multiple-goal game of her career, helping the Spartans top Emory University 5-2 on Sunday afternoon. Kukura scored her first goal in the 20th minute and connected on her second in the 85th minute. She led all Spartans in the contest with three shots, including all three on goal. The Spartans improved to 7-10-0 overall, and 1-5-0 in the UAA.

Brianna Lemon (volleyball) recorded a .212 hitting percentage for the week, notching 24 kills (3.00 per set) and a team-best 38 digs (4.75 per set). During a 3-0 win over the College of Wooster on Saturday, Lemon tallied 10 kills and also added a game-high 15 digs. For the season, Lemon leads the Spartans with 302 kills (3.05 per set) and 331 digs (3.34 per set). Her 3.05 kills per set currently ranks fifth in the University Athletic Association.

Faith Ellis (volleyball) tallied 83 assists this past week to help the Spartans post a 1-1 record. Ellis leads the Spartans with 817 assists and 7.93 assists per set for the season. Her 7.93 assists per set currently ranks third in the University Athletic Association.

Sam Merriman (men’s cross country) earned all-conference first team honors after placing sixth at the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships at the Garret Mountain Reservation in Woodland Park, New Jersey on Saturday.  Merriman crossed the finish line with a time of 26:25.7, to place sixth among the 77 finishers in Saturday’s 8K race.

Sean Twomey (men’s swimming & diving) earned a first place finish for the Spartan men in a dual meet against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Twomey placed first in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:12.72. His time of 4:12.72 currently ranks second-best in the University Athletic Association.

Suhan Mestha (women’s swimming & diving) earned a first and second-place for the Spartan women in a dual meet against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Mestha finished first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.30. She added a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.43. Mestha’s time of 2:08.43 in the 200-yard backstroke currently ranks fourth-best in the UAA.
