The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University senior Justin McMahon, a linebacker on the football team, and senior Elle Zadina, a midfielder on the women’s soccer team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performance’s this past weekend.
McMahon led a dominating defensive effort for the 17th-ranked Spartans during their 45-7 win at Geneva College on Saturday night. McMahon finished the game with a team-high 10 tackles (three solo), including 1.5 for a loss, and returned a fumble recovery 68 yards for his first career touchdown. His scoring play occurred on the last play of the first quarter, helping the Spartans extend their lead to 21-0. The team co-captain also led a defensive effort that held the Golden Tornadoes to just 236 yards of total offense, while limiting the leading rusher in Division III to just 53 yards on the ground. The 10 tackles were a season-high for McMahon, who leads the team with 39 total tackles (15 solo) this season. Case Western Reserve improved to 7-0 overall with the win, including a 6-0 record in the PAC.
Zadina scored three goals to give the Spartans a 3-1 victory against Oberlin College on Saturday afternoon. Zadina’s first goal came early when she recovered a rebound off a shot from sophomore forward Kimberly Chen and shot it from outside the box. Her second goal of the game came at 65:27 in the second half after she took a rebound shot from junior midfielder Angelina Batty and headed it past the Oberlin goalkeeper. Zadina capped off the hat trick when she ripped a shot off a free kick to the top left corner of the net in the 88th minute play. For the season, Zadina now leads the Spartans with six goals and two assists for 14 points. The Spartans improved to 6-9-0 with the victory.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Jacob Burke (football) carried the ball 14 times for 69 yards and two touchdowns during the 17th-ranked Spartans’ 45-7 win at Geneva College on Saturday night. He is 18th among all Division III players with 11 rushing touchdowns and has totaled 581 yards on the ground in 2017.
Seldon Magruder (men’s soccer) scored his sixth goal of the season as the Spartans put up a pair of goals against one of the top defenses in Division III, but fell 3-2 to 10th-ranked North Park University on Sunday.
Lauren Unterborn (women’s soccer) played 90 minutes in goal for the Spartans during the team’s 3-1 win over Oberlin College on Saturday. Unterborn allowed one goal and made three saves to improve to 6-9-0 on the campaign.
Katie Kaminski (volleyball) led the Spartans to a 1-1 record this past weekend in Tiffin, Ohio. Kaminski recorded a .571 attack percentage for the weekend, notching a team-high 22 kills (2.75 per set) and a team-best six total blocks (0.75 per set). During a 3-2 win over Marietta College, Kaminski led the Spartans with 15 kills on a .682 hitting percentage.
Faith Ellis (volleyball) tallied a team-high 70 assists (8.75 per set) and collected a team-best six service aces. During the Spartans 3-2 win over Marietta College, Ellis gathered 48 assists and five service aces. For the season, Ellis leads the squad with 734 assist (7.73 per set). Her 7.73 assists per set average currently ranks third in the UAA.
Sean Twomey (men’s swimming & diving) helped the Spartan men claim a 211.5-76.5 season-opening win over John Carroll University on Saturday. Twomey earned first place finishes in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:13.77) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:59.16). His time of 2:13.77 in the 200 Breast currently ranks seventh-best in the University Athletic Association, and his time of 1:59.16 in the 200 IM ranks sixth.
Cassiel Yuzik (men’s swimming & diving) swept the diving events with a score of 2:11.43 in the one-meter dive, and 183.68 in the three-meter dive. His score of 2:11.43 in the one-meter dive currently ranks seventh in the UAA, while his score of 183.68 in the three-meter dive ranks eighth.
Suhan Mestha (women’s swimming & diving) helped the Spartan women earn a 215-76 season-opening victory over John Carroll University on Saturday. Mestha finished first in the 100-yard backstroke (59.14) and the 200-yard backstroke (2:08.99). Her time of 59.14 in the 100 Back currently ranks seventh-best in the University Athletic Association, and her time of 2:08.99 in the 200 Back ranks second.
Sydney Anderson (women’s swimming & diving) swept the diving events with a score of 168.83 in the one-meter dive, and 165.08 in the three-meter dive. Her score of 168.83 in the one-meter dive ranks 12th in UAA, while her score of 165.08 ranks 11th.
Mira Amin (women’s tennis) went 3-0 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles matches, despite facing top-ranked Division III competition throughout the weekend at the Middlebury Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. Amin finished her fall campaign with a team-best 6-2 singles record, and a 6-4 doubles mark.
