Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 8: Andrew Munn and Hillary Hellmann

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Andrew Munn, a 157-pounder on the wrestling team, and junior Hillary Hellmann, a guard/forward on the women’s basketball team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Munn went 4-1 in the 157-pound bracket at the Waynesburg Invitational on Saturday. His performance contributed 24.0 points towards the teams 85.0 total points and helped the Spartans place seventh at the competition. Munn notched a second-place finish in the 157-pound draw. He picked up a technical fall victory (16-0) over Gettysburg’s Tristan Chen, another technical fall win over Washington & Jefferson’s Evan Brown (18-1), a 9-4 decision over Mount Union’s Richard Rush and then earned a 6-3 decision over Johns Hopkins’ Dominick Reyes in the semifinals. For the season, Munn has an overall record of 4-1 (.800), including two technical falls.

Hellmann matched her season-high with a team-leading 25 points during the team’s conference-opening game against Carnegie Mellon on Saturday.  Hellmann shot eight-of-18 overall from the floor, including four-of-seven from behind the three-point line, and added a five-of-seven performance from the free throw line to get to 25 points, the most in a game by any University Athletic Association player during the opening game of conference competition.  She added a team-leading eight rebounds during the game, with an assist and a steal, over her 32 minutes of action.  Hellmann is leading the team and is ranked third among all UAA players this season with 18.1 points per game, while also adding 6.7 rebounds per contest.  The Spartans fell to the Tartans 69-57 on Saturday in Cleveland, dropping to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in the UAA.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: T.J. Duckett (men’s basketball) averaged 17.5 points and 12.5 rebounds to lead the Spartans to a pair of victories last week.  Duckett shot 15-of-21 (71.4%) from the floor and five-of-eight (62.5%) from the free throw line over the two contests, adding a team-high three blocks with an assist and a steal.  He helped the Spartans open conference play with a dominating 94-63 win over Carnegie Mellon on Saturday, leading all CWRU players with 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, despite playing just 20 minutes.  He shot six-of-seven from the floor and three-of-three from the line during the game.  Earlier in the week, Duckett led all players with 20 points and 16 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season in a 63-60 win at Oberlin College, shooting nine-of-14 from the floor and adding a block and a steal.  For the year, Duckett ranks second in the conference in both rebounds per game (10.8) and shooting percentage (60.5%), and has paced the squad with 14.5 points per game.  The Spartans have won four-straight games to improve to 7-5 overall for the season.
