Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for Jan. 29: Ignas Masiulionis and Danielle Kulpins

The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes.  For more information on the Spartan Club, and to help support its purpose by becoming a member, CLICK HERE.

Case Western Reserve University freshman Ignas Masiulionis, a guard on the men’s basketball team, and senior Danielle Kulpins, a distance runner on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past weekend.

Masiulionis paced the team in scoring over a pair of road games last weekend, leading the Spartans to their first-ever sweep of a University Athletic Association road weekend.  Masiulionis averaged 19.0 points per game on 50.0% shooting overall (13-of-26), including a 53.3% mark from behind the three-point line (eight-of-15).  On Friday night, he scored 16 points on a five-of-nine shooting effort, including a four-of-seven mark from behind the three-point line, and added two rebounds and an assist in an 89-58 victory at Brandeis.  He followed that with a career-high 22 points (including five in overtime) during a 77-75 win at New York University, shooting eight-of-17 from the floor and four-of-eight from long range, while adding three rebounds.  For the season, he is second on the team with 11.2 points per game, shooting 39.2% overall and 38.5% on three point attempts, while averaging 3.1 rebounds per contest.  Masiulionis and the Spartans are 10-8 overall this season, including a 4-3 record in the UAA.

Kulpins led the Spartan women to a 71-65 victory over Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday. Kulpins grabbed a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:44.96 and then won the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:07.13. Her time of 18:07.13 in the 5,000-meter run currently ranks second among runners in the University Athletic Association.

The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.

Honorable Mention: Jasmine Floyd (women’s basketball) scored a career-high 14 points during the Spartans’ 63-42 loss at Brandeis University on Friday.  Floyd shot a perfect six-for-six from the floor, including successfully making both of her three-point attempts, while adding an assist and a block over 23 minutes of action off the bench.

Sam Merriman (men’s track and field) earned a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run at the 10th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk. Merriman crossed the finish line in a time of 8:43.90, which currently ranks third among University Athletic Association runners.

Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) led the Spartan men at the 10th-Annual Battle for the Obelisk on Saturday. Oddo earned the title in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.00 meters, a mark good enough for a new school record and meet record. Oddo surpassed his previous school record of 6.97 meters set earlier this indoor season. Oddo also added another first-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.65. His mark in the long jump currently ranks first in the University Athletic Association.

Cassandra Laios (women’s track and field) swept the throwing events to help the Spartan women defeat Carnegie Mellon 71-65 on Saturday. Laios hit a mark of 16.78 meters in the weight throw and then hit a mark of 13.35 meters in the shot put. Both marks were new meet records. Her marks in the weight throw and shot put were also the top marks in the University Athletic Association this week.

Oliver Hudgins (men’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan men to a 194-106 victory over Ohio Northern on Saturday. He finished first in the 50-yard freestyle (22.40) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.01). Hudgins was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay team that won the event with a mark of 3:35.61 and the 200-yard freestyle relay team that won with a time of 1:28.86.

Brooke Hortness (women’s swimming and diving) helped the Spartan women defeat ONU 215-84 and also defeat NCAA Division II program Hillsdale College 184-107 on Saturday. Hortness swept the diving events as she finished first in the one-meter dive with a score of 192.45 and then won the three-meter dive with a score of 199.70.

Caitlyn VonFeldt (women’s swimming & diving) helped the Spartan women pick up wins against Ohio Northern and Hillsdale this past weekend.
