The Spartan Club, comprised of Case Institute of Technology (CIT), Western Reserve University (WRU) and Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) alumni, parents of current students, faculty and staff, and friends of the University, is aimed at helping foster and honor the proud tradition of athletics at the University, while also supporting the current student-athletes. Case Western Reserve University sophomore Andrew Hoover, a 141-pounder on the wrestling team, and junior Olivia Newman, a sprinter on the women’s track and field team, have been named the Spartan Club Athletes of the Week for their performances this past week.
Hoover led the Spartans to a 3-1 record this past week. Hoover posted a perfect 4-0 record throughout the four dual matches, including two pins and one technical fall. In the Spartans’ 24-19 win over Adrian on Wednesday, Hoover claimed a technical fall victory over James Renaud (17-2, 5:55). On Saturday, Hoover helped the Spartans pick up wins against Penn State Behrend and Kent State University at Tuscawaras. He pinned Behrend’s Daniel Bishop in 3:51 and then pinned Kent State’s Austin Bailey in 1:15. For the season, Hoover leads the team with 16 wins (16-8 overall at 141 pounds) and has totaled five pins and one technical fall. The Spartans improved to 5-3 in dual matches after this week’s competition.
Newman helped the Spartan women finish second out of 12 teams at the 2018 SPIRE Invitational this past weekend. Newman won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:00.25. Her time currently ranks third in the University Athletic Association.
The Spartan Club Athletes of the Week are selected by the CWRU Department of Athletics each Monday, based on their performance during the previous week of competition.
Honorable Mention: Ignas Masiulionis (men’s basketball) averaged 14.0 points over the Spartans’ two games last weekend, shooting .500 from the floor (11-of-22) and 38.5% (five-of-13) from long range. For the season, he is averaging 10.2 points per game. The Spartans are 8-8 for the season, including a 2-3 UAA record.
Hillary Hellmann (women’s basketball) led the team in scoring during both games last weekend, while also reaching the 1,000-point mark for her career. Hellmann averaged 17.5 points and 6.5 rebounds over the two games, shooting 37.1% (13-of-35) from the floor and 36.4% (four-of-11) from behind the three-point line, while adding three blocks, three steals and an assist. For the season, Hellmann leads all CWRU players with 16.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. The Spartans are 3-12 overall and 0-5 in league play.
Zak Hurd (men’s track and field) earned a third-place finish in the 60-meter dash to help the Spartan men place third at the SPIRE Invitational. Hurd ran a time 7.16, which currently ranks in the University Athletic Association.
Dominic Oddo (men’s track and field) helped the Spartan men place third out of 13 teams at the 2018 SPIRE Invitational this past weekend. Oddo won the long jump with a distance of 6.60 meters. His distance ranked as the best mark in the UAA this week.
Cassandra Laios (women’s track and field) earned a first-place finish in the weight throw to help the Spartan women place second at the SPIRE Invitational. Laios hit a mark of 16.52 meters in the event. Her toss was the best mark in the UAA this week.
Will McDonald (men’s swimming and diving) led the Spartan men this past weekend, as he picked up two first-place finishes against SUNY-Geneseo. McDonald won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 53.33 and then added a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:56.78. McDonald was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that placed second with a time of 1:36.32.
Inez Moore (women’s swimming and diving) headlined the women’s performances this past weekend, as she won the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 54.81. Moore was also a member of the 200-yard medley relay team that won the event with a time of 1:48.51. In addition, Moore was a part of the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished first with a time of 3:36.45.
