2017 CWRU Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Season Recap

The Case Western Reserve University women's outdoor track and field team concluded the 2017 outdoor season with many noteworthy performances, including seven All-UAA honors at the University Athletic Association Championships, set one program record and claimed the UAA Most Outstanding Field Events Performer Award.

During the two-day conference championships, hosted by the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois, junior Cassandra Laios claimed three conference titles in throwing events to be named the UAA Outdoor Track and Field Women's Most Outstanding Field Events Performer. Laios claimed the title in the hammer throw and shot put on the first day. In the hammer, she set a school-record with a mark of 49.56 meters. The distance broke the previous school-record mark of 49.1 meters, set by senior Temi Omilabu last season. She became just the third Spartan ever to win the event at the UAA Outdoor Championships, joining Amanda Kline (2012) and Omilabu (2016). Laios also won the conference title in the shot put, becoming the first Spartan to win the event since 2012. She finished first in the event with a mark of 12.00 meters.

On the second day of the Outdoor Championships, Laios won the conference title in the discus throw with a mark of 39.10 meters. This marks the fourth time in program history that a Spartan has claimed the conference title in the event, the first since Amanda Kline in 2012. With this honor, Laios became the first Spartan woman since Amanda Kline in 2012 to be named UAA Most Outstanding Performer.

Omilabu also earned an All-UAA honor in the hammer throw, after finishing second in the event with a throw of 49.19 meters. Sophomore Shannon Carroll added All-UAA honors in a pair of events with a third-place finish in the shot put with a toss of 11.51 meters and placed second in the javelin throw with a mark of 35.57 meters. In the 400-meter hurdles, sophomore Olivia Newman placed third in the event with a time of 1:03.77.

Two members of the women's outdoor track and field team also received All-Great Lakes Region recognition from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), based on their performances during the 2017 outdoor season. Spartans receiving All-Region honors included Newman in the 400-meter hurdles and Laios in the hammer throw.

Newman was fourth in the Great Lakes Region in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:03.77 at the UAA Outdoor Championships on April 22nd, while Laios finished fourth in the region and 23rd in Division III in the hammer with a new school-record mark of 51.30 meters at the Harrison Dillard Twilight on May 12th. That distance smashed her previous school-record mark of 50.35 meters set earlier in the season.

In addition to their work on the track and field, 19 members of the Case Western Reserve women's outdoor track and field team received Spring UAA All-Academic recognition.
