CWRU Track & Field to Compete at 2017 UAA Outdoor Championships

Case Western Reserve University will head to Chicago, Illinois for the 2017 University Athletic Association Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Chicago from Saturday, April 22nd through Sunday April 23rd.

Field events at the UAA Championships are scheduled for a 10:00 a.m. CT start on Saturday, with running events commencing at 12:00 p.m. CT. Action will resume on Sunday, with field events again starting at 10:00 a.m. CT, and competition on the track beginning at 11:30 a.m. CT. The final event at the meet – the men's and women's 4x400-meter relay will begin at 2:20 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Last season, the Spartan men placed sixth out of the seven teams at the meet, with Washington winning the UAA Championship, Carnegie Mellon placing second, and NYU third. Returning all-UAA performers from last year's meet for the Spartan men include senior Nathaniel Wahner, who finished third in the 400-meter dash, and junior Grant Mlack, who claimed the UAA title in the 400-meter hurdles.

Entering this year's meet, the Spartans have 12 potential entrants ranked in the top-five of men's events in the UAA this season. Leading the way is Wahner, who is the top-seeded runner in the 100-meter dash (10.67 seconds), and is also fifth-best in the 200-meter dash (22.23 seconds) and second-best in the 400-meter dash (48.83 seconds). Wahner has also teamed with junior Ben Zelkin, junior Adrian Cannon and junior Zak Hurd for the second-best 4x100-meter relay time (42.43 seconds). In addition, Wahner has also teamed with junior Andrew Ibibo, sophomore Joseph Cabral and freshman Jonathan Haling for the second-best 4x400-meter relay time (3:20.15).

Ibibo is also third in the 400-meter dash (49.11), while other top-five competitors for the CWRU men this year include junior Sam Merriman in the 5,000-meter run (second, 14:29.93), Mlack in the 110-meter hurdles (second, 15.12 seconds) and in the 400-meter hurdles (fifth, 56.39 seconds), freshman Dominic Oddo in the long jump (second, 6.70m), sophomore Ananth Suresh in the triple jump (tied for fourth, 13.18m), junior Alex Nesvisky in the hammer (fourth, 43.51m) and in the shot put (fifth, 13.63m), junior Jason Lockamy in the discus (fifth, 41.61m), senior Pat Shober in the javelin throw (first, 55.32m) and freshman Brian Holden in the javelin (second, 54.51m).

The CWRU women placed fourth in the team standings at last year's UAA Outdoor Championships, with Washington winning the meet, followed by Emory in second and Chicago in third. Senior Temi Omilabu will enter the meet as the reigning UAA Champion in the hammer throw, while junior Cassandra Laios added two All-UAA honors with a second-place finish in the discus throw and a third-place finish in the shot put. The other returning All-UAA performer from last year's meet for the Spartans include sophomore Olivia Newman in the 400-meter hurdles (third).

Laios will enter this year's meet as the top-seeded performer in the shot put (12.33m), discus throw (40.12m) and hammer throw (47.38m). Sophomore Shannon Carroll has the top-mark in the javelin throw (36.10m) and second-best toss in the shot put (12.17m), while other top-five performances this season by an UAA athlete have been notched by Omilabu in the hammer (third, 45.45m), junior Nimi Gupta in the hammer (fourth, 44.79m), freshman Marina Yu in the hammer (fifth, 41.97m), junior Rachel Laveson in the 10,000-meter run (fifth, 39:00.35), junior Marie-Louise Kloster in the 400-meter hurdles (fourth, 1:05.05), and Newman in the 400-meter hurdles (fifth, 1:05.06). Kloster and Newman also teamed with senior Abby Casalnova and freshman Vanessa Pasadyn for the fourth-best time in the 4x400-meter relay (4:02.19).
