Highlighting the Spartan performances on Friday evening, senior Joe Ledger and Nathaniel Wahner shattered school records in their respective events as the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's track and field team finished competition at the Greater Cleveland Colleges Meet.
The Spartan men finished in first place of five team teams at the meet having scored 288 points, while the women finished second of five teams with 138 points.
A distance runner, Ledger finished first in the 1,000-meter run with a new school-record time of 2:34.56. The time bested the previous school record of 2:36.79 set in 1994 by Shaun Brown.
Wahner sprinted to another school-record breaking the time for the Spartans in the 55-meter dash. Finishing first in the event, Wahner crossed the finish line with a time of 6.62, breaking the record of 6.65 set Desmond Ellis during the 2006 indoor season.
Wahner also placed first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.54, a new facility record. Junior Zak Hurd finished second in the event with a time of 23.74.
Also with strong performances for the Spartan men, junior Andrew Ibibo finished first in the 400-meter dash (50.82) and freshman Michael Hradesky and junior Alec Southern finished one and two in the 800-meter run with times of 2:00.66 and 2:01.18, respectively.
Junior James Gibson placed first in the one-mile run (4:28.30), senior Galen Caldwell won the 3,000-meter run (9:06.23) and freshman Xavier Yozwiak finished first in the 5,000-meter run (16:29.06).
Freshman Dominic Oddo won the long jump with a distance of 6.67 meters, placed second in the high jump with a distance of 1.77 meters and also finished second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.31.
Sophomore Ananth Suresh won the triple jump (12.49 meters), while sophomore Tyler Bushman placed second in the weight throw (14.97 meters) and junior Alex Nesvisky finished third in the shot put (13.57 meters).
The Spartan women went one and two in the 400-meter dash as senior Abby Casalnova and junior Marie-Louise Kloster crossed the line with times, respectively, of 1:01.76 and 1:02.61. Sophomore Maria DeRenzo also added a first place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.09.
In the field events, the Spartan women earned three second-place finishes and one third-place finish. Freshman Malayna Mason claimed second in the women's pole vault with a distance of 2.75 meters. Sophomore Shannon Carroll placed second in the shot put with a mark of 11.78 meters, while senior Temi Omilabu earned a second-place finish in the weight throw (15.87 meters) and junior Cassandra Laios a third-place finish (15.29 meters).
Case Western Reserve will next travel to Waltham, Massachusetts from February 25th- 26th for the 2017 University Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Brandeis University.
