The Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team will get its 2017 fall season started this weekend, when the team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio for the BGSU Invitational.
The Spartans will be looking to pick up where they left off last season, when the squad finished the year ranked 18th in Division III. The 2016-17 Spartans went 17-5 overall for the season, and placed fifth at the University Athletic Association Championships.
The 2017-18 edition of the team will feature a number of familiar faces, although junior Jessica Liu, an All-UAA First Team selection for her play at no. 1 doubles, will not be with the team in the fall as she studies abroad. Senior and team captain Nithya Kanagasegar will be the team's top-returning player headed into the fall, after finishing her junior season ranked 29th among all NCAA Division III singles players, and fourth among players in the Central Region. Kanagasegar also competed in the NCAA Division III Individual Championships for the third-straight season.
Senior Nina Cepeda, an All-UAA Honorable Mention at fourth singles after compiling an overall singles record of 13-9, and senior Peyton Young (18-8 singles record last year) will provide leadership for the team, while sophomores Katrin Gurvich (13-9 in singles matches last year) and Lauren Beier (3-4 in singles matches) will add experience to the lineup.
In addition, CWRU will be welcoming four new freshman to the fold, as Mira Amin, Nicole Cardwell, Kenzie Osborne and Madeleine Paolucci are all set to begin their collegiate careers during the 2017-18 season.
Case Western Reserve will kick off its campaign this weekend at the BGSU Invitational in Bowling Green, Ohio, from Friday, September 8th through Saturday, September 9th. Also in the fall, the Spartans are slated to compete at the ITA Central Regional Championships in Oberlin, Ohio from Friday, September 22nd through Monday, September 25th, as well as competing at the Middlebury Invite in Middlebury, Vermont from Friday, October 20th through Sunday, October 22nd.
CWRU's results from the weekend will be posted to athletics.case.edu as they are made available throughout the tournament, and a recap of the Spartans' performance will be posted to the website at the completion of competition.
