The 18th-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team suffered a setback in its first match of the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships, as the Spartans were edged by the 11th-ranked Carnegie Mellon University 7-2 at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The loss will send the fifth-seeded Spartans to the consolation draw, where they will take on the eighth-seeded and nationally 37th-ranked University of Rochester at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 21st. Carnegie Mellon will advance to the UAA semifinals to take on the top-seeded and nationally top-ranked Emory University on Friday.
With the loss, the Spartans fell to 15-5 overall on the season, while the Tartans improved to 16-6.
Carnegie Mellon won the first doubles match of the day, with Vinaya Rao and Courtney Ollis besting junior Peyton Young and freshman Kendal Holladay 8-4 in the second doubles match. However, the Spartans would win the next two doubles matches, with junior Nithya Kanagasegar and sophomore Jessica Liu, ranked fifth in the region, defeating the region's sixth-ranked pairing in Nicholle Torres and Cori Sidell 8-5 in the first doubles match, and junior Nina Cepeda and freshman Katrin Gurvich defeating Jamie Vizelman and Katie Lai 8-5 in the third doubles match.
In singles play, Carnegie Mellon tied the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win for regionally 16th-ranked Vizelman over Liu in the third singles match, and took the lead after Rao defeated Cepeda in the fourth singles match, 6-1, 6-2. The Tartans added to their lead when Siddel, ranked seventh, topped Holladay, ranked 23rd, at second singles, 6-3, 6-0. CMU secured the match victory when Ollis bested freshman Katie Busch at sixth singles, 6-4, 7-5.
CWRU fell in the final two singles matches, with Lai defeating Young, 7-5, 7-6, at fifth singles, and Torres, ranked third, topped Kanagasegar, ranked fourth, in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
The Spartans will now turn their attention towards their consolation matchup on Friday. Rochester will enter the match with an overall record of 13-5. The Yellowjackets are ranked 13th in the Northeast Region, and feature regionally-ranked singles player Camila Garcia (24th) and the 13th-ranked doubles pairing in Garcia and Lauren Zickar. This will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams, after the Spartans picked up a 7-2 win over Rochester on March 5th behind doubles wins from Kanagasegar and Liu, Young and Holladay, and Cepeda and Busch, and singles wins from Kanagasegar, Liu, Cepeda and Young.
The winner of Friday's match will advance to face the winner of the other consolation contest between New York University and Brandeis in the fifth-place match, while the losing teams will face in the seventh-place match. Both matches are scheduled for Saturday at 9:00 a.m.
