ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Despite a valiant comeback attempt, the No. 22 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team lost the fifth-place match of the 2013 University Athletic Association Championship Tournament versus No. 24 Brandeis University (Mass.) on Saturday morning at Sanlando Park.
The Spartans (12-9, 1-2 UAA) turn in the best UAA Championship finish for the program since it placed fifth in 1997. Although the team's season has come to an end, the year is likely not over for freshman Sara Zargham (Torrance, Calif./California Academy of Math and Science), who ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region singles poll. An at-large berth to the NCAA Singles Championship would make Zargham the first female in CWRU history to compete at the event.
On Saturday, the Judges (10-9, 2-1 UAA) swept doubles play to grab a 3-0 lead as the best Spartan effort (8-5) came at the top position from senior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman Surya Khadilkar (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Hawken School).
In singles play, the Spartans rallied to win the first two decisions at No. 5 and No. 6 with straight-set victories courtesy of sophomores Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Northmont) and Alexandra Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union). Bonanno blanked Roberta Bergstein 6-0, 6-0 in the fifth position, and Alex Lim defeated Maya Vasser 6-4, 6-0 at six.
However, leading by just one, Brandies picked up the next two points to clinch the match with decisions at No. 1 and No. 3. The Spartans earned the final two points to bring the final score to 5-4 with a two-set win at No. 2 by Erika Lim and a three-setter at No. 4 from Khadilkar.
