GAMBIER, Ohio – In a matchup of two regionally-ranked squads, the Case Western Reserve University women's tennis team upset Kenyon College, 6-3, in the 2012 spring opener at the Kenyon Athletic Center on Friday evening.
The Spartans, No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Central Region, improve to 4-0 in dual matches this season. Kenyon, ranked 12th in the region, drops to 1-1 in duals.
Case swept through doubles competition with the No. 1 duo of junior Erika Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) and freshman sister Alexandra Lim (Fullerton, Calif./Fullerton Union) picking up an 8-5 victory versus Amy Schlessman and Amanda Polster.
The Spartans picked up 8-4 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 from the tandems of sophomore Bianca Patel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore)/junior Kathleen Evers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mount Notre Dame) and junior Emily Pham (Mason, Ohio/William Mason)/freshman Marianne Bonanno (Clayton, Ohio/Northmont).
In singles play, Pham won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 versus Lydia Winkler. Alex Lim was victorious at No. 4 (6-1, 6-7, 7-5) versus Carly Bond, and Evers won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5 versus Stephanie White.
The Spartans remain in Gambier to play North Carolina Wesleyan University at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning.
