Spartan Wrestlers Sweep Tri-Meet with Thiel and Lourdes on Senior Night

Five Spartan wrestlers won both of their matches, and the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team swept a tri-meet with Thiel College and Lourdes University on Wednesday evening in Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans (2-1) defeated Thiel (3-2), 33-14, and defeated Lourdes (2-9), 25-21.

Prior to Wednesday's matches, CWRU recognized their five graduating senior members – Cito Balsells, Connor Gordon, Nate Lewis, Nate Tommas and Nick Tommas.

Versus Thiel, sophomore Alec Hoover put the Spartans on the board first with pin over Matthew O'Connor at 133 (4:40). Sophomore Andrew Hoover followed with a 9-0 major decision win over Vincent Mion at 141.

The Tomcats picked up the next decision, but the Spartans responded by winning the next five matches due to a pin by sophomore Andrew Munn at 157 (1:10), major decision at 165 in favor of Gordon (11-1), forfeit at 174 in favor of Nick Tommas, a 5-3 decision at 184 for Nate Tommas and then a major decision win for junior Gavin Dersh-Fisher at 197 (13-3).

Versus Lourdes, the Spartans dropped the first match, but then Alec Hoover earned a 5-2 decision over Tyler Roberts and Andrew Hoover picked up a 11-2 major decision win over Riley Heater to take a 7-6 lead. The Gray Wolves took the match at 149, but then Munn regained the CWRU lead with a technical fall victory over Troy Wilson (18-0, 4:30).

Lourdes would win the next two matches before Nate Tommas pinned Noah Nuno in 2:37 to cut the deficit to 21-18. Dersh-Fisher then clamed a 13-2 major decision win over Hunter Jacks to regain the lead at 22-21. Junior Brian McNamara's 7-2 decision over Ben Ferguson at 285 sealed the 25-21 victory for the Spartans.

The Spartans will return to action on Saturday, January 13th, for the 2018 Si Ostrach Meet. CWRU will host Washington & Jefferson College at 12:00 p.m., Kent State University at Tuscarawas at 3:00 p.m. and Brockport College at 4:30 p.m. in Horsburgh Gymnasium on the CWRU campus.
