CLEVELAND – Freshman Joe DeGenova (Lexington, S.C./Lexington) scored a thrilling overtime, sudden victory decision at 197 pounds as the Case Western Reserve University wrestling team lost a dual match by a score of 41-3 to cross-town rival Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday inside Horsburgh Gymnasium.
DeGenova moved up a weight class and took on BW freshman Kevin Thomas at 197. DeGenova trailed by two in the final seconds, but scored a reversal at the buzzer to tie the score at 7-7 and force overtime. The score remained tied through one minute, but both wrestlers executed an escape during the second overtime. DeGenova then won the match 10-8 with a tiebreaker point and an unsportsmanlike penalty during the sudden victory session.
In addition, freshman 157-pounder Eric Sullivan (Middletown, Ohio/Lakota East) battled Garrett Chase to the end, but the Yellow Jacket freshman scored an escape in the final seconds to secure a 7-6 victory.
The Spartans now have three weeks off from competition for final exams and winter break training, and will return to action on December 29-30 at the Citrus Invitational in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
