Spartan Wrestlers Open 2010-11 Season at Messiah Invitational
GRANTHAM, Pa. – The Case Western Reserve University wrestling team kicked off its 2010-11 season on Saturday, November 6 at the Messiah Invitational, hosted by Messiah College (PA), by finishing sixth overall in a field of nine teams with 32 points.
Messiah and Waynesburg University (PA) tied for the team title with 105 points, while Elizabethtown College (PA) took third with 90 points. Baldwin-Wallace College finished fourth with 59 points, while Ursinus College (PA) scored seven more points (39) than the Spartans to finish fifth overall. Case defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy (30.5 points), the University of Maryland - Baltimore County (27 points) and McDaniel College (17.5 points).
Defending national champion Isaac Dukes (Ravenna, OH/Ravenna) got off to a quick start for the Spartans, winning four straight matches as the top-seed to claim the title in the 149-pound weight class. Dukes defeated Elizabethtown's Tye Boyer, the tournament's second-seed, in the championship match.
Freshman Frank Hu (Delaware, OH/Orange) had a solid debut for Case as well, going 2-1 in the championship bracket at 125 pounds. Hu was a winner against classmate Victor Pan (West Chester, OH/Lakota West) and Waynesburg's Jeff Swaney. Sophomore Evan McDowell (Bellaire, TX/Episcopal) also posted a 2-1 record in the 157-pound championship bracket, taking down Ursinus' Matthew Generotti and Elizabethtown's Henry Tucker.
Case will be back on the mats Saturday, November 13 for a home dual match against Baldwin-Wallace at 1:00 p.m.
