Spartans Fall to Tartans in the Season Finale

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team wrapped up its 2017-18 season with a 71-55 loss at University Athletic Association rival Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on Saturday afternoon.

Junior forward Hillary Hellmann led the Spartans with 22 points and nine rebounds, knocking down eight-of-18 shots, including four-of-six from behind the three-point line.  Freshman forward Emma Cain shot six-of-14 for 12 points, and added eight rebounds for the Spartans in Saturday's game.

The Spartans led by a point, 14-13, after a jumper by Cain with 3:05 left in the first quarter, but Carnegie Mellon scored the final five points of the frame to take an 18-14 lead by the end of the period.  The Tartans would run away in the second quarter, outscoring CWRU 23-11 in the period, despite a half-ending 5-0 run with a layup by Cain and a three by Hellmann that cut it to a 41-25 Carnegie Mellon lead by the break.

CWRU trimmed the lead back to single digits in the third quarter, when freshman forward Megan Shanosky sank a pair of free throws to make the score 48-39 with 2:22 to go, but the Tartans would rebuild their lead to 15 by the end of the period, and the Spartans could not get it any closer the rest of the way.

Laurel Pereira finished with a double-double for the Tartans with 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Makayla Filiere added 13 points for Carnegie Mellon.

With the loss, the Spartans ended their 2017-18 season with an overall record of 4-20, including a 1-13 record in the UAA, while Carnegie Mellon finished its year with a 10-15 overall record, including a 2-12 conference mark.
