Spartans Drop Smokey Ballenger Classic Opener to Host Otterbein, 84-62

The Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team dropped an 84-62 contest at Otterbein College on Friday night in the opening game of the Smokey Ballenger Classic in Westerville, Ohio.

Case Western Reserve fell to 3-6 on the year with the loss, while Otterbein raised its record to 6-4 with Friday night's victory.

Junior guard/forward Hillary Hellmann led the Spartans with 18 points, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter alone, and shooting eight-of-18 from the floor overall, including two-of-six on three point attempts.  Sophomore guard Kendall McConico added 17 points on a five-of-10 shooting effort, and led all Spartan players with four assists in the game.

McConico provided much of the offense for the Spartans in the first half of the game, scoring seven points in the first quarter alone.  The Spartans led by two, 14-12, following a pair of free throws by junior guard Alexis Amburgey with 2:09 to go in the opening stanza, but the Cardinals would score six of the final seven points in the period to take an 18-15 lead by the end of the first quarter.  Despite 11 first half points for McConico, Otterbein's lead would balloon to as many as 15 points, 42-27, after a pair of made free throws to end the half.  The Cardinals would maintain a double-digit lead for the entirety of the second half, and lead by as many as 26 points with 6L56 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 37.0% (20-for-54) overall.  Otterbein's Dani Kissel led all players with 24 points on Friday.

The Spartans will wrap-up play at the Smokey Ballenger Classic on Saturday, December 30th at 1:00 p.m. against 21st-ranked Marietta College.
