An all-around athlete, his coach Bill Edwards considered Stephen Belichick the best fullback he had ever seen. He was a standout player on the 1941 Sun Bowl Team, and when the football season ended each year, Belichick headed for the basketball courts where he reigned as one of the Redcats’ most indomitable round-ballers. After graduation, Belichick played one year with the Detroit Lions. He later went on to become assistant football coach at Vanderbilt and then for many years at the U.S. Naval Academy.
