The Case Western Reserve University softball team will hit the road again this weekend, as they travel to Holland, Michigan to face 17th-ranked Hope College in the NCAA Division III Softball Super Regional.
Action in the best-of-three series begins on Friday, May 18th with a 4:00 p.m. game. On Saturday, May 19th the second contest is slated for 1:00 p.m. first pitch with a third game, if necessary, slated to begin at 3:30 p.m. Holland is one of eight sites hosting Super Regionals with each winner moving on to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to compete in the NCAA Championships (May 24-29).
The Spartans, led by Head Coach Josie Henry, are 35-9 on the year and are making their first-ever trip to the Super Regional Round in the program's history. CWRU earned the right to play this weekend after capturing the Notre Dame Regional, winning four of five contests. The Spartans opened with a 1-0 loss to Ohio Northern University last Friday, but then came back on Saturday to earn a 7-0 win over Mount Aloysius College and also 6-2 win over host and first-seeded St. Mary's College (Ind.). In the deciding contests on Sunday, CWRU overpowered Ohio Northern with great pitching and timely hitting to earn a 5-0 win in the early contest, and then a 5-1 win in the late affair.
Hope is led by Head Coach Mary Vandehoef, who has directed the Flying Dutch to an overall record of 33-10. Hope is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, and has earned the league's automatic bid to the postseason. This is the Flying Dutch's eighth NCAA postseason appearance and third in four seasons. Hope advanced to last season's regional final.
