CWRU Softball to Host Wooster on Saturday at Earlier Time; Play at #17 Heidelberg on Sunday

The Case Western Reserve University softball team will host the College of Wooster on Saturday, April 2nd and then travel to Tiffin, Ohio on Sunday, April 3rd for a matchup against 17th-ranked Heidelberg University.  Saturday's doubleheader against Wooster has been moved up to an 11:00 a.m. start from its original time, while Sunday's games are slated to begin at 2:00 p.m.

CWRU Spartans
The Spartans are coming off a sweep of a doubleheader against Hiram College in its home-opener on Tuesday, defeating the Terriers 7-5 in the first game and 8-1 in the second contest.  Case Western Reserve is 12-16 overall on the season, including records of 2-0 in home games, 6-6 in road contests, and 4-10 in neutral-site games.  The Spartans are batting .308 this season and averaging 5.1 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 3.86 earned run average with a .293 opponents' batting average.

The Spartans are under the leadership of Head Coach Josie Henry, who is now in her sixth season with the team, and has a career record of 138-95, good for a .592 winning percentage.  Henry is assisted by Ashley Parello, Molly O'Brien and Natalie DeMatteis.

Wooster Fighting Scots
Wooster stands at 9-9 during the 2016 campaign, including marks of 0-2 in road games and 9-7 in neutral-site contests.  The Fighting Scots recently saw a four-game winning streak come to an end, when they dropped both games of a doubleheader at Mount Union, falling 12-6 in the first game and 10-0 in the second.  Wooster has a team batting average of .296 this year and averaged 4.4 runs per game, while pitching to a 3.05 ERA with a .316 opponents' average.

Wooster is under the leadership of Acting Head Coach Jeff Bricker.  He is assisted by Stephen Alcorn.

Last season, the Spartans swept a doubleheader with Wooster, winning 3-1 in the first game and 6-0 in the second contest.  Katie Wede went four-for-four and scored all three of the team's runs in the first game, while Annie Wennerberg picked up a complete-game win, allowing just six hits and striking out eight batters in the game.  In the second game, Wennerberg was one-for-three with a double and three runs batted in, while Grace Tritchler added a two-for-three day at the plate.  Case Western Reserve has won the last four games against Wooster.

Heidelberg Student Princes
The Student Princes, ranked 17th in the latest NFCA Division III poll, has won six of its last seven games and stands at 15-3 overall this season.  Included in the team's overall record are marks of 4-0 at home, 2-2 on the road, and 9-1 in neutral-site games.  Heidelberg is batting .359 as a team this season with 7.4 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a team ERA of 1.88, with a .267 opponents' average.

The Student Princes are led by eighth-year Head Coach Betsy Hada, who has a career record of 154-133 for a .537 winning percentage.  She is assisted by Erin Porter and Jessie Probst.

The teams last met during the 2014 season, with the Student Princes sweeping a doubleheader against the Spartans in Cleveland, winning 8-5 in the first game and 5-3 in the second contest.  Prior to that, the Spartans had won three of their previous four matches against Heidelberg. 

Spartan Notes

Including Tuesday's victory over Hiram, the Spartans have now won their last five home-opening games… CWRU hitters leading off innings are reaching base at a .416 percentage this season… The Spartans are 7-2 when they hold their opponents to two runs or less in a game, and 11-3 when they outhit their opponents… Junior Annie Wennerberg tied the school record with her 28th career home run during the team's game against Brandeis on March 9th… She matched the mark previously held by former Spartan Lauren Wolz (2009-12)… She is also seventh in school history with 91 career RBIs, 45 behind the program record, and one behind Ashley Parello for sixth in the record book… Wennerberg also began the week ranked 11th among all Division III pitchers in strikeouts… Grace Tritchler is 37th among all NCAA Division III players in RBIs this season and 17th in home runs… Tritchler picked up hits in both games of the doubleheader against Hiram to increase her hitting streak to eight games, the second-longest streak by a Spartan player this year… Tritchler leads all CWRU players with 11 multiple hit games and seven multiple RBI games, and has a team-best .383 average, 10 doubles, six home runs and 26 runs batted in… Sophomore Katie Wede has paced the team with 22 runs scored and 16 stolen bases on 17 attempts… The 16 stolen bases are tied for the fourth most in school history in a single season, and six behind the program record of 22, which was set by former Spartan player Molly O'Brien in 2013.
