PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Case Western Reserve University sophomore shortstop Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, Mich./Ida) has been selected as the University Athletic Association Softball Hitter of the Week, announced the league office on Tuesday. Lein earns the award for the first time in her career.
In a doubleheader sweep of local-rival John Carroll University on Thursday, April 19, Lein batted .625 (5-of-8) with two solo homeruns, six runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. The sophomore homered in each end of the doubleheader and was 3-for-4 in game two.
Lein has heated up at the plate since moving to the No. 2 spot in the order, hitting .415 with 15 runs batted-in and 13 runs scored over the last 16 games. For the season, she is a .325 hitter with three homers, 25 RBI, 29 runs scored and a team-best 11 doubles.
The Spartans (23-14 overall) have won the third-highest number of games in program history heading into the final two doubleheaders of the regular season.
The team has added a twinbill with Penn State University-Altoona on Wednesday, April 25 at Nittany Lion Park, home of the Division I Penn State University softball team, at 3:00 p.m. in State College, Pennsylvania.
Case then closes out the regular season at home this Sunday, April 29 versus Wittenberg University. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Mather Park. The event is designated as Spartan Softball Alumni Day in addition to the dedication of the new Mather Park scoreboard made possible through the gift of the Flora Stone Mather Alumnae Association.
