BETHANY, W. Va. – The Case Western Reserve University softball team inched closer to the .500 mark for the season with a doubleheader sweep of Bethany College on Sunday, April 17 at the BC Softball Diamond. The Spartans won the opener, 5-4 in eight innings, then earned a 5-0 shutout in game two to improve to 18-22 overall.
Case has now won 12 of its past 14 games and will return to action versus La Roche College (PA) on Wednesday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. at Mather Park in Cleveland.
In game one, the Spartans rallied to tie the score at 3-3 with three runs in the top of the sixth. After scoreless sevenths for both sides, the game went to extra innings and Case scored twice in the eighth to counter one run by Bethany (17-13 overall) in its half of the frame. Junior third baseman Kaeleen Boden (Strongsville, OH/Holy Name) and sophomore rightfielder Kayla Lang (Broadview Heights, OH/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) each collected RBI singles to push the Spartans ahead in the eighth.
Freshman Makenzie Lein (Petersburg, MI/Ida) tossed all eight innings to improve to 12-7. She allowed three earned runs with five strikeouts.
At the plate, Lang was 3-for-4 with two runs batted-in and senior first baseman Anneliese Fetterman (Cupertino, CA/Monta Vista) was 2-for-3 with a walk and a run.
In game two, freshman Katherine Seo (Salt Lake City, UT/Olympus) fired seven shutout innings with one strikeout to improve to 6-8.
The Spartan offense scored twice in the fourth and fifth as well as once in the sixth. Junior designated player Lauren Wolz (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) continued her hot streak at the plate with a 2-for-3, three RBI performance that included a two-run homer in the fourth.
