Cross Country Back in Action at Two Weekend Meets

After taking last weekend off from intercollegiate competition, the Case Western Reserve University men's and women's cross country teams will take part in a pair of meets this Saturday, October 14th, with part of the squad headed to the Yellowjacket Invitational in Rochester, New York, and another group traveling to Oberlin, Ohio for the 2017 Inter-Regional Rumble.

The Spartans will be coming off their best team performances to date at the All-Ohio Championships on Friday, September 29th, when the men finished second and the women third in the team standings.  As a result of the meet, the Spartan men made their initial appearance in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division III Coaches' Poll, checking in at 35th in the nation.  In addition, the men are currently ranked fourth in the Great Lakes Region, while the women are ranked sixth.

The Yellowjacket Invitational will be held at Genesee Valley Park, with the women's race slated for an 11:00 a.m. start, to be followed by the men's 8K race at noon.  Fans can follow the action with live results at https://results.leonetiming.com/XC.html?mid=1287.

Last year, the CWRU men placed second out of 29 teams at the Yellowjacket Invitational (which was held in the beginning of the season rather than the middle), with Merriman leading the all Spartan finishers with a sixth-place finish.  The women finished fifth out of 27 squads in the team standings, led by a 22nd place finish by Kulpins.

The Oberlin Invitational, held at Oberlin College, will begin with the women's varsity 6K race at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's varsity 8K race at 11:15 a.m.  There will also be open races, with the women's open 6K scheduled for a noon start, and the men's open 8K slated for a 12:45 p.m.  Live results for the meet will be available at http://deltatiming.com/.

Runners scheduled to be competing for CWRU include sophomores Grace Kemerer, Catherine Lawton, Mallorie Mitchem, and Gillian Prater-Lee and freshmen Abby Cowher and Madison Vargo for the women, and seniors Michael Girbino and Joseph Volpe, juniors James De La Cruz, Robert Iriye, sophomores Jacob Goldberg, Michael Hradesky, Michael Klein and Luke Robbins, and freshmen Daniel Grasing, Rory Owens, Thomas Patton, Eric Rachita and Ryan Tatton for the men.

The Spartan men placed sixth out of 32 teams at last year's Inter-Regional Rumble, paced by a third-place finish from Merriman.  Kulpins finished 11th in the women's race to lead the CWRU women to a sixth-place finish out of 29 squads in attendance.
