No. 32 Spartan Men Place Fifth at UAA Championship; Best Finish Since 2008
ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Led by two All-University Athletic Association performers, the No. 32 nationally-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's cross country team placed fifth of eight squads competing at the 2012 UAA Championship Meet on Saturday afternoon at Genesee Valley Park. The Spartans earn the best finish for the program and produce an All-UAA finisher for the first time since 2008.
No. 10 Washington University-St. Louis won the team title with 52 points. No. 12 New York University with 60, No. 19 Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) with 65 and No. 22 University of Chicago with 88 placed ahead of Case Western Reserve's 141 points.
Senior co-captain Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) led the pack with a 10th-place finish and a time of 25:32.30 on the 8k course. Kelly earns the best place for a Spartan runner since Dominic Smith finished sixth in 2008. Joining Kelly with a second-team All-UAA finish was junior David Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Lakeside) with an 11th-place time of 25:41.30.
Kelly's fellow co-captain Ethan Teare (Burton, Ohio/Berkshire) was next to cross the line in 35th place (26:15.40), while senior Phil Yeung (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) and freshman Timothy Travitz (Salisbury, Md./Parkside) rounded out the scoring in 40th and 45th place, respectively. Yeung crossed in 26:23.8, while Travitz finished in 26:31.60.
Following a week off from competition, the Spartans return to action on Saturday, November 10 at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship at 11:00 a.m. in Anderson, Indiana. The NCAA Championship Meet follows on Saturday, November 17 in Terre Haute, Ind.
