Case Women's XC Finishes Second, Men Take Third at CMU Pre-Regional

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin) finished second overall to lead the Case Western Reserve women's cross country team to a second-place team finish, while the men's team placed third overall at the Carnegie Mellon University Mideast Pre-Regionals on Saturday, September 25.

The Spartan women tallied a team score of 68 points to finish 27 points behind the meet-winner, Oberlin College. Grove City College (PA), Haverford College (PA) and CMU rounded out the top-five. Case claimed two of the top-five spots in the race, with Jeroski as the runner-up in 22:20 and junior Natalia Cabrera (Shaker Heights, OH/Shaker Heights) finishing fourth overall in 22:46.

Freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon,OH/Solon) scored an 18th place finish on the strength of her time of 23:49, while senior Andrea Fischione (Export, PA/Franklin) crossed the line 21st overall in 23:56. Sophomore Corin Bowen (Midland, MI/Bullock Creek) also scored for the Spartans, placing 23rd in 24:04. Running in defense for the Spartans were senior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO/Ursuline) and senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter). 

 On the men's side, Case posted 90 points to take third behind Oberlin (52) and CMU (33).

 Two top-15 finishes highlighted the day , as sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) crossed the finish line in 26:36 to place 10th and senior Robert Ontko (Houston, TX/Strake) clocked in at 26:48 to finish 14th overall. Other Spartans scoring in the meet were junior Ethan Teare (Burton, OH/Berkshire), who finished 20th in 27:01, senior David Carter (Wadsworth, OH/Wadsworth), taking 21st in 27:03 and Brian Link (Lititz, PA/Warwick), placing 25th in 27:14. Senior Bobby Voight (Galloway, OH/Hilliard Darby) and Phillip Yeung (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Claire) ran in defense for the Spartans.

Next up for both teams will be the All-Ohio Championships at Cedarville University on October 1. The race is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start.
