With just two weeks remaining before the 2018 University Athletic Association Championships, the Case Western Reserve University track and field teams appeared to be in top form on Saturday, with senior Danielle Kulpins setting a program record at the All-Ohio Outdoor Championships in Delaware, Ohio.
Kulpins earned All-Ohio honors with a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:40.17 to best her previous school record of 11:10.89 set in 2016. Her time also set a new meet record at the All-Ohio Championships, as she bested Baldwin Wallace's Jessica Textoris who ran a time of 10:40.89 during the 2003 season.
Sophomore Michael Hradesky led the men on Saturday by claiming an All-Ohio honor in the 800-meter dash, placing first with a time of 1:55.87.
Other Spartans earning All-Ohio honors for a top three finish in an event at the meet included senior Rachel Willard in the triple jump, finishing second with a mark of 10.99 meters, and junior Shannon Carroll finished second in the javelin throw with a toss of 36.78 meters. For the men, senior Andrew Ibibo claimed a second-place finish in the 400-meter dash (49.59) and a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (22.20).
Senior Aidan DeSanto placed second in the 1,500-meter run (3:58.28), senior Andrew Green finished second in the 5,000-meter run (15:24.30), junior Robert Iriye placed third in the 10,000-meter run (33:45.17), sophomore Dominic Oddo finished third in the long jump (6.68m) and sophomore Jonathan Haling placed third in the 400-meter dash (49.80). In addition, the men's 4x400-meter relay team of Ibibo, Haling, Hradesky and senior Grant Mlack finished second in the event with a time of 3:20.79, while the men's 4x100-meter relay of senior Ben Zelkin, senior Zak Hurd, sophomore Darius Inzar and freshman Joe Dinko placed third in the event with a time of 43.10.
Other scoring performances (top-eight finishes) for the CWRU men came from freshman Yoshmar Pinal-Alfaro in the 5,000-meter run (fourth, 15:32.77), Mlack in the 110-meter hurdles (sixth, 15.26), junior Tyler Bushman in the hammer throw (sixth, 47.68m), freshman Kai Fletcher in the triple jump (seventh, 12.66m), Hurd in the long jump (seventh, 6.41m), senior Ben Whitman in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (seventh, 9:43.96) and freshman Dmytro Blundell in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (eighth, 9:46.81).
Additional scoring performances for the Spartan women came from senior Nimi Gupta in the hammer throw (fifth, 47.59m), sophomore Abby Waltz in the pole vault (sixth, 3.42m, bests previous school record of 3.40m set by Sophia Herzog in 2014), sophomore Vanessa Pasadyn in the 800-meter run (fifth, 2:21.05) and in the 1,500-meter run (seventh, 4:47.48), junior Isabel Torres-Padin in the 1,500-meter run (sixth, 4:44.12), senior Marie-Louise Kloster in the 400-meter hurdles (eighth, 1:07.72), freshman Emma Hammelef in the shot put (eighth, 11.00m) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Kloster, Pasadyn, sophomore Brianna Rees and freshman Julie Hines (sixth, 4:11.30).
The Spartan men finished third out of 19 teams at the meet with 90 points, while the women placed eighth out of 19 team with 47 points. Host Ohio Wesleyan won the men's portion of the meet, while Oberlin won the women's portion.
Case Western Reserve will return to action next weekend, as they head to Berea, Ohio to compete in the Sparky Adams Invitational, hosted by Baldwin Wallace University. Action is scheduled to take place from Friday April 20th through Saturday, April 21st.
