Jurcak Sets Stadium Record; Spartan Men Compete at VMI/Washington & Lee Carnival
LEXINGTON, Va. – All-American senior sprinter Matthew Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) established a stadium record in winning the 110-meter hurdle event leading the Case Western Reserve University men's track & field team during the two-day Virginia Military Institute/Washington & Lee Carnival on Friday and Saturday at VMI's Read Memorial Track at Foster Stadium.
Jurcak, who finished fifth during the 2012 NCAA Division III Indoor national meet in the 60-meter hurdles, translated that success outdoors leading the field home in the 110 hurdles with a stadium record time of 14.94 seconds.
Junior pole vaulter Nick Errico (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and sophomore thrower Harry Weintraub (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) also posted individual event victories. Weintraub won the hammer throw with a toss of 166 feet, two inches, while Errico cleared the bar at a height of 13' 5.25" to win the B flight of the pole vault competition.
In other track events, Case sophomore David Dixon (Atlanta, Ga./Lakeside) finished fourth during the grueling 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:08.11, while senior Nick Nelson (Urbana, Ohio/Urbana) finished fifth behind Jurcak in the 110H with a time of 15.83.
The 4x800-meter relay quartet of Dixon, junior Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg), senior Jim Mather (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) and junior Michael Perisa (Cortland, Ohio/Warren JFK) crossed the line in fifth place in a time of 8:18.77.
Senior co-captain Eben Via (Evanston, Ill./Taylor Allderdice (Pa.)) finished in third behind Weintraub in the hammer throw competition with a toss of 163' 6", while senior pole vaulter Frank VanTassell (Minneapolis, Minn./Red Wing) was fourth in the B flight pole vault event with his best height of 12' 1.50".
Additionally, senior Jacob Miller (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Ignatius) cleared the bar in the high jump at 5' 8.75", good for a tie for fifth.
The Spartans are back in action next Friday and Saturday, March 30 and March 31 when they head south for the third-straight weekend and take part in the Emory University (Ga.) Classic at the Woodruff P.E. Center.
