Spartan Track & Field Teams Edged by Rival CMU in Battle for the Obelisk; Kline Sets Indoor Shot Put Record
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University track & field teams were edged by one point, 127-126, in dual meet action versus rival Carnegie Mellon University (PA). The Spartan women won their side of the meet, 79-47, but the men fell, 80-47, giving CMU the higher combined point total and claim to the Obelisk Trophy. Junior Amanda Kline (Lancaster, OH/Lancaster) highlighted the day for the Spartans with an indoor school-record throw in the shot put.
The Obelisk Trophy is awarded to the winning school in what has become an annual dual meet between the two programs started by head coach Steve Rubin.
Kline's throw of 40 feet, 10 and one-quarter inches beat her own school-mark and was good for first place. Kline also won the weight throw with a mark of 45-01.00.
Overall, the women had eight individual winners and captured both relays.
Senior Justine Jeroski (Murrysville, PA/Franklin Regional) posted a winning time of 18:05.62 in the 5,000-meter run – currently the best in the University Athletic Association.
Sophomore Valoryn Whitelock (Lexington, OH/Lexington) won both the high jump (4-09.75) and long jump (16-02.50), while freshman Thenessa Savitsky (Frackville, PA/North Schuykill) placed first in the triple jump with a mark of 34-00.00. Senior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO/W.T. Woodson) won the mile run in 5:22.04 and junior Leslie Stanard (Maple Heights, OH/Maple Heights) captured the 200m dash in 27.11.
The 4x400m relay team of Stanard, freshmen Gavriella Pora (Nampa, ID/Liberty Charter) and Kaitlin Fanning (Canton, NY/Hugh C. William), and sophomore Alyssa Harker (Mentor, OH/Mentor) crossed the finish line first in 4:13.39.
The distance medley team of freshman Brooke Simpson (Solon, OH/Solon), Fanning, senior Bettina Kaphingst (Lewiston, NY/Lewiston-Porter) and Jeroski were winners with a time of 12:30.64.
The men won five individual events and one relay.
Junior Matt Jurcak (Olmsted Falls, OH/Olmsted Falls) was a double-winner in the 55m hurdles (7.78) and 55m dash (6.75). Freshman Harry Weintraub (Croton on Hudson, NY/Hendrick Hudson) had a season-best weight throw of 51-05.50 to win his event, sophomore Chris Kelly (Twinsburg, OH/Twinsburg) won the mile run in 4:27.15, and senior Jim Mather (Baldwinsville, NY/Christian Brothers Academy) recorded a personal-best time of 50.77 in winning the 400m dash.
The distance medley relay team of senior Mark Grogan (Coraopolis, PA/Our Lady of the Sacred Heart), Mather, sophomore Michael Perisa (Cortland, OH/Warren JFK) and Kelly won in 10:23.90.
The Spartans have next weekend off from competition before returning to action on Friday, February 11 at the Baldwin-Wallace College Invitational. Action is set to begin at 5:00 p.m.
