Chen Named UAA Men’s Tennis Athlete of the Week

Case Western Reserve University freshman Matthew Chen was named the University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for men's tennis, after going undefeated in both singles and doubles play at the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio on Saturday and Sunday.

Making his intercollegiate debut, Chen went 3-0 in the second singles flight, picking up wins over Tom Bickel of Carnegie Mellon (6-3, 6-2), Michael Liu of Kenyon (by default) and Robert Levin of Carnegie Mellon (6-4, 6-2).  In doubles play, he teamed with sophomore Sam Concannon to win the second doubles flights, with victories over Kenyon's Peter Hazlett and Henry Wessel (8-1), Denison's James McDonald and Mitchell Thai (8-6) and Oberlin's Robert Gittings and Manickam Manickam.

The Spartans will continue their fall campaign this weekend, with the team taking part in both the Greater Cincinnati Collegiate Invitational and the Oberlin Invitational.
