#12 CWRU Seeded Fifth at UAA Champs; Will Open with Rematch against #7 CMU

The 12th-ranked Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team was selected as the fifth seed for the 2017 University Athletic Association Championships, and will open play on Friday, April 21st against seventh-ranked and fourth-seeded Carnegie Mellon University at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Case Western Reserve will enter the match on a hot streak, winning nine-straight matches and 15 of their last 17 to improve to 19-4 overall, three wins shy of the program's single season record.  Carnegie Mellon has won six-straight matches, including a 5-4 victory over #20 Johns Hopkins University in their last contest, to stand at 15-7 overall for the campaign.

Friday's opening round match between the Spartans and the Tartans will be a rematch between the two teams from earlier in the season.  CWRU and Carnegie Mellon previously faced off in the opening round of the ITA Indoor Championships, with the Tartans edging the Spartans by a 5-4 score.  Claiming wins during the match for CWRU were the duos of sophomore John Benedetto and senior Fred Daum at no. 1 doubles and freshmen Anthony Kanam and Sam Concannon at no. 3 doubles, while Concannon added a straight-set win in the fifth singles match, and senior Kevin Dong picked up a three-set victory at sixth singles.

The Spartans, ranked third in the Central Region, feature the 16th-ranked singles player in the region in senior James Fojtasek and the 15th-ranked doubles team in Daum and Benedetto.  Carnegie Mellon's lineup features three singles players ranked in the Atlantic South Region – Daniel Levine (second), Michael Rozenvasser (fourth) and Chaz Downey (18th) – and one regionally-ranked doubles pairing – Vayum Arora and Levine (fourth) – while the team is second overall in the Atlantic South.

As usual, the field for the UAA Championships features some of the top competition in Division III, with seven of the eight teams nationally ranked, including four in the top-seven nationally.  In addition, all eight teams are currently regionally ranked, while 14 singles players and eight doubles teams scheduled to compete were in the most recent ITA rankings, released last Thursday.

The other match on the Spartans' side of the draw features top-seeded and second-ranked Emory University against the eighth-seeded University of Rochester, with the winners facing each other in the semifinals and the losers taking on each other in the consolation draw at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd.  Opening round matches on the other side of the draw include second-seeded and sixth-ranked Washington University (Mo.) against seventh-seeded and 34th-ranked Brandeis University, and the third-seeded and fifth-ranked University of Chicago against the sixth-seeded and 31st-ranked New York University.

The Championship, Third-Place, Fifth-Place and Seventh-Place matches will all take place on Sunday, April 23rd at 9:00 a.m.

Full results and a recap of each of the Spartans' matches will be posted to athletics.case.edu following the completion of competition each day.  In addition, live statistics links will be posted to the website and to the CWRU men's tennis schedule page once they are made available for each match.  Fans can also follow the official team twitter account @casetennis1 for updates throughout the tournament.
