GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team picked up a pair of dual match wins on Saturday, February 18 versus Taylor University (Ind.) and DePauw University at the DePauw Indoor Tennis and Track Center. The Spartans swept Taylor by a 9-0 tally before defeating the 16th-ranked Tigers, 6-3 to improve to 4-4 overall on the young season.
Case picked up all six singles points dropping just one set to Taylor. Freshman Bas Van Lent (Wexford, Pa./Pine-Richland) started things off at first singles with a victory versus Jon Wegener by a score of 6-7, 7-6, 10-5. At No. 2 singles, junior Richard Brunsting (Nashville, Tenn./Montgomery Bell Academy) bested Weston Young in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 tally.
Brunsting's classmate Nicolas Howe (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) was a winner at third singles against Wes Nitzsche, 6-1, 6-1. In the fourth slot, junior Alex Solove (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) defeated Luke Tilden 6-1, 6-1 and at fifth singles, sophomore Derek Reinbold (Carmel, Ind./Park Tudor) took down Jon Erny 6-4, 6-2. Sophomore Ben McClarren (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson) was victorious at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-2 versus Andrew Gnagy.
The Spartans also picked up all three doubles points. Carr and Brunsting took an 8-6 decision versus Wegnerer and Young. Howe and Gerber also scored a win at second doubles, 8-2 versus Tilden and Gnagy, while senior Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) and freshman Will Drougas (Roanoke, Va./Salem) rounded out the win with an 8-3 decision versus Kenny Cassidy and Michael Reynolds.
In the evening matchup against the nationally-ranked Tigers, the duo of Gerber and sophomore John Healey (Columbia, Md./Atholton) started the match off with an 8-6 victory versus the No. 7 nationally-ranked doubles tandem of Ben Kopecky and Sam Miles. Carr and Brunsting picked up a point at No. 2 with an 8-4 decision versus Reid Garlock and David Moss, while the tandem of Howe and Drougas made it a clean sweep during doubles with a tight 9-8 (8-6) win.
In singles play, Drougas battled to a three-set victory versus Miles by a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 tally, while the deciding point of the match for the Spartans came from sophomore Eric Klawitter (Arlington Heights, Ill./John Hersey) at No. 4. DePauw's Noah Swiler won the first set (6-3), but Klawitter responded taking the final two sets 6-1, 6-4. Not done yet, Case's sixth point was garnered by Patel in a 6-3, 6-4 decision versus Chris Bertolini.
The Spartans are back in action on Friday, February 24 when they host Allegheny College (Pa.) in their first home match of the spring. The match will take place at the Cleveland Skating Club with a start time of 6:30 p.m.
