CINCINNATI, Ohio – Several members of the Case Western Reserve University men's tennis team competed at an Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Summer Circuit Event at the University of Cincinnati.
Junior Alex Solove (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) teamed with Kevin Metka of the Ohio State University to win the men's doubles draw. Senior Sean Carr (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and junior Kyle Gerber (Columbus, Ohio/St. Charles Prep) advanced to the semifinals before falling to the eventual champions. Carr came back with five straight victories, including three versus Division I competition, to win the singles consolation bracket.
Carr was 13-16 as the Spartans' No. 1 singles player in 2010-11 and finished the regular season with the No. 18 ranking in the ITA Central Region. Solove has 12 singles wins and 10 doubles victories during his first two seasons as a collegian. Gerber has 30 doubles wins and 24 singles victories in two seasons.
In 2010-11, the men's team finished with a dual match record of 12-8, with losses coming strictly to nationally-ranked opponents and Division I competition. The squad also earned the first-ever ITA national ranking in program history and finished the season in the No. 19 spot in the national polls – the highest tennis ranking in CWRU history. The Spartans finished fifth in the ultra-competitive University Athletic Association and defeated four nationally-ranked opponents. The team also produced a top-20 singles player and the No. 7 doubles tandem in the ITA Central Region.
With its entire roster back, the team opens the 2011-12 campaign at the Washington & Lee University (Va.) Invtiational on September 10-11.
