Spartan Men Up a Spot to Second After Day Two of 2012 UAA Championship

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's swimming & diving team improved one spot to second place on day two of the 2012 University Athletic Association Championship hosted by CWRU at Veale Natatorium.

Emory University (Ga.) is the leader with 1,278 points, while the Spartans sit at 795.5. The University of Chicago (Ill.) is third at 767, Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.) is fourth at 733, and Washington University-St. Louis is fifth at 683.

Freshman Andrew Bollinger (Boulder, Colo./Fairview), sophomores Sean Nickley (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) and Gus Bailey (Grove City, Ohio/Grove City), and freshman Caleb Allen (Knoxville, Tenn./Bearden) opened the evening with a third-place showing in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:34.67.

Individually, Nickley placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.03 seconds. Freshman Eric Haufler (Westminster, Md./Francis Scott Key) took sixth in the 100 butterfly in 51.26 seconds, while Bollinger finished seventh in the 100 backstroke in 52.80.

In the final event of the night, the 800 free relay quartet of sophomore Scott McHenry (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury), freshman Elliott Kerbel (Skokie, Ill./Niles West), sophomore Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) and Haufler placed fourth with a time of 6:56.36 – just two-tenths of a second away from matching the CWRU record.

Day three of the championship begins on Friday morning with 10:00 a.m. prelims. Men's one-meter diving will take place at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. at William H. Johnson Natatorium in University Heights, while the swimming finals are slated for 6:00 p.m. at Veale.
