Spartan Swimming & Diving Teams Sweep ONU on Seniors’ Day

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Case Western Reserve University men's and women's swimming & diving teams swept visiting Ohio Northern University on Seniors' Day (Saturday, January 29) at the Veale Natatorium. The men were victorious 190-108 and the women won 163-131 behind an NCAA B-Cut qualifying mark in the 100-yard butterfly by freshman Maggie Dillione (Newton, PA/Council Rock).

The Spartan men finish the dual meet portion of their schedule at 7-2 and the women conclude at 4-5. Both teams are idle for the next several weeks as they prepare for the University Athletic Association Championship meet on February 17-19 at the University of Rochester (NY). Prelims are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. each day with finals slated for 6:00 p.m.

Dillione's qualifying mark (58.05) was her second in as many meets, as she also hit the B-Cut in the 200 fly (2:06.28) last Saturday.  

The men won both relays and 10 individual events. 

Freshman diver Dan Jacobson (Solon, OH/Solon) continued his stellar rookie campaign with a pair of wins on the one-meter (299.90 points) and three-meter (288.55) boards.

Junior Sam Geiger (Westlake, OH/St. Edward) won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 10:03.59 and the 500 free in 4:54.99. Senior Robby Browning (Grosse Pointe, MI/Grosse Pointe South) captured first in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes with times of 52.40 and 1:57.77, respectively. Freshman Gus Bailey (Grove City, OH/Grove City) also was a double-winner with victories in the 50 free (21.46) and 100 free (48.27). Freshman Heath Hudgins (Chapel Hill, NC/East Chapel Hill) won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.09 and freshman Scott McHenry (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) took the 200 butterfly in 2:00.36.

The 400-yard medley relay team of Browning, senior Peter Fino (Sterling Heights, MI/Detroit Jesuit), freshman Sean Nickley (Springfield, VA/West Springfield) and Bailey touched first in 3:33.20. The 400 freestyle team of Hudgins, Geiger, freshman Nick Clyde (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron) and Bailey were winners with a time of 3:16.40.

Dillione coupled her win in the 200 fly with a first-place showing in the 200 freestyle (1:56.06). The Spartan women also had seven other individual winners and captured both relays.

Senior Ellen Crummy (Butler, PA/Butler) was a double-winner in the 100 back (1:01.36) and 200 back (2:11.27). Freshman Sara Tillie (Fallston, MD/Fallston) won the 1,000 free in 11:02.53; sophomore Brittany Sussman (Englewood, OH/Northmont) touched first in the 200 fly in 2:20.41; senior Roxanne Leyshon (Cambridge, OH/Mercersburg Academy) captured the 100 free in 54.56; senior Kelsey Zeller (Cincinnati, OH/Anderson) won the 500 free in 5:24.42; and senior Emma Call (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) placed first in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:20.36

The 400 medley relay team of Crummy, senior Jacquie Buckler (Brookfield, WI/Brookfield East), Dillione and Leyshon touched the wall in 4:04.16.

The 400 freestyle relay team of junior Stephanie Campbell (Highland Heights, OH/Mayfield), junior Jessica Nuhfer (Warren, PA/Warren Area), Leyshon and Dillione placed first in 3:42.23.
