CWRU Men’s Soccer to Host Pair of Tough Opponents this Week

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team will wrap-up a four-game home stand this week, as they prepare to host seventh-ranked John Carroll University and Marietta College. The Spartans will face John Carroll on Wednesday, September 13th at 7:30 p.m., and then will welcome Marietta College to DiSanto Field for a 12:00 p.m. match on Saturday, September 16th.

CWRU Spartans (2-1-1)

The Spartans hung with the second-ranked team in Division III on Friday night, but three second-half goals by the Calvin College Knights sent CWRU to a 3-0 setback. The Spartans finished the game with a slight edge in total shots, 13-12, but Calvin was able to put seven of its chances on goal, with the Spartans placing five on net.

In Saturday's match against Brooklyn College, the Spartans offense erupted for a 10-0 win. Sophomore midfielder Zachary Senft and freshman forward Seldon Magruder each scored two goals to lead the Spartan attack. The 10 goals scored by the Spartans set a new program record. The previous record was set in 2015 against Waynesburg.

#7 John Carroll Blue Streaks (4-0-0)

The Blue Streaks went 2-0 this past weekend with wins against Penn State Behrend and Medaille College. Against Penn State Behrend, John Carroll fell down early as the Lions struck for a goal in the fifth-minute of play. The Blue Streaks offense then responded with three unanswered goals to earn the victory. Jesse Marinaro finished the game with one goal and one assist, including the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute.

On Sunday against Medaille, JCU scored three first half goals to remain unbeaten on the 2017 season. The Blue Streaks received two goals from Hayden Parente (11th and 14th minute) and closed out the scoring with a goal from Jacob Lombardo. The four wins to start the season matches JCU's best start since 2003, when the Blue Streaks began 4-0.

Marietta Pioneers (4-0-0)

The Pioneers also went 2-0 this past weekend with wins against Olivet College and Adrian College. Marietta defeated Olivet 1-0 on Saturday via a goal by Andy Rolfes in the 69th minute. The Pioneers then made a quick turnaround and earned a 2-0 victory against Adrian on Sunday. Brent Huck scored in the 62nd minute and Josh Baskind secured the victory with a goal in the 76th minute.

Marietta will host fifth-ranked Kenyon College on Wednesday, before they travel to Cleveland to face the Spartans on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Calvin Boyle ranks first in the University Athletic Association with 16 saves and fourth with a .842 save percentage…Sophomore Zachary Senft ranks second in the UAA with 15 shots, while senior Michael Balog ranks third with 14…The Spartans have totaled 81 shots and 30 shots on goal in its first four games of the 2017 season…CWRU has held opponents to averages of five shots on goal per game, and 9.75 shots per contest.
